Tell us about the band and how you got together
Bella Brown & The Jealous Lovers are a Los Angeles based, transplanted from Chicago, unit that specializes in 60s/70s soul and funk. The band is fronted by the dynamically charismatic Bella Brown. A fiery female lead singer that is a mixture of Tina Turner and Sharon Jones, with a persona that is reminiscent of the empowered female leads of 70s Blaxploitation films. Backed by the musicianship of The Jealous Lovers they form a unit that expertly expresses a uniquely modern interpretation of the traditional soul and funk genres.
Tell us about your latest release.
Our new single “What Will You Leave Behind” has just been released on all digital platforms. Our label, LRK Records, has made the single available as a digital download and is now taking presale orders on a vinyl 45 version of the single with a forthcoming release as the B side.
What’s the inspiration behind the song.
“What Will You Leave Behind” is a heartfelt call to action in these times of failed humanity and injustice. A Motown influenced message of hope that features sympathetic vocals, supportive horns, and a funky twist that asks us to create a better future by considering the effects of our present
Tell us about your writing and recording process, what instruments, hardware or software to you use.
The record is comprised entirely of live vocal and instrumental performances. All the instruments are the real deal. No software, or synthesized instruments.
What is your 2023 looking like, do you have any exciting plans, new releases, tours or gigs.
Edit We still have to release another digital single “Bang, Bang, Bang”. That will also be the B side of the 45 now available as a presale. We are also finishing up tracks for a forthcoming LP.
Can you give us a classic track, something that has inspired you or simply one you love and never get sick of listening to.
This Stylistics track has been a source of inspiration for a new track.
Can you recommend any new music, something that you’ve just discovered or are just really digging at the moment.
Our label, LRK Records, is a great source of new indie Soul music. They’ve managed to put together a great roster of acts. We find that a great inspiration, and we think any music fan would love their lineup!
Do you think playlists are important, what types do you enjoy, in your opinion, what’s the future of the playlist.
We’ve been really fortunate to have our music placed on a number of playlists. It’s always humbling when a curator feels our music deserves a wider audience, and we can’t overstate the importance of the exposure.
