About this playlist
If you think Jazz is for an older crowd, most of the dancers in the early fusion scene were young and at times considered past it by their mid 20’s by the younger dancers some only 13 and 14 years old.
In the early 80s London, Jazz nights sprang up in pub backrooms and small clubs like Jaffa’s and the Jazzifunkclub nights at the Horseshoe and Electric ballroom young black Londoners would develop the dance style of Fusion with DJ’s like Colin Parnell and Boo breaking new Jazz sounds every week and Paul Murphy’s Jazz room, a overlooked part of British Youth culture.
It was the similar story in the north, especially Birmingham and Manchester and then in the late 70’s, early 80’s an increase in dancers coming out of the the Northern and Modern Soul scene as tastes changed saw a rise in the interest of Jazz and Fusion with new nights springing up across the country and DJ’s adding Jazz and Fusion to their collections.
The scenes impact in dancing and music could be heard for years to come and still effects British dance music today, a story that should not be forgotten, the music itself will never be, step back in time with the Hoof’s selection of dancefloor Jazz.
