Where To Start With Paul Older on Spotify
London based record label Slightly Transformed brings us a five-track EP from Italian producer and DJ Paul Older with almost 20 years of experience behind the desk. Paul is constantly looking for new music and ideas as he assembles and orchestrates a mixture of sounds to shake-up the dancefloor. The Editladia E.P is full of high quality 70’s disco edits, from the funky ‘Be Bop’ to the soulful ‘Bass Falls’, the classic Debbie Jacobs track ‘Hot Hot’ reconstructed into ‘Hot Deb’ then there’s the exotic oriental disco sounds of ‘Malaysian Kitty’.
‘Hu-Man’ is the featured track on the Shake a hoof playlist below, an edit of the modern soul track ‘Human’ by North Carolina soul & funk band Brief Encounter, originally appearing on the B-side of 1977 single “Total Satisfaction” relatively unknown outside of soul circles, the band recorded music from 1974 to 1981, now their music is making a well deserved come back with fresh re-edits, re-releases and re-pressings from labels like Athens of the North and Slightly Transformed.
Listen to the original on part B of the Hoofs series of A- Z of soul playlists with more music from Brief Encounter, Barry White, Bill Withers, Billy Paul, Bobby Sheen, Bunny Sigler, Bo Kirkland…
The Hoof caught up with Paolo for a chat
Tell us about yourself, when and how did you get into music, DJ’ing and producing.
Hi guys! I’m Paolo from Padua (Italy) and I fall in love with music since I was 3 years old, when I used to listen to my father’s vinyl collection, I started djing almost 20 years ago, playing house, garage and disco music. Listening to several amazing old soul/boogie tunes for years, I knew that some of them have hidden potential and I felt that they could be refreshed to be perfect for these times and playable for DJs.
Some years ago I listened to the first disco edits and remix and I understood that was my way.
What’s the inspiration behind the EP and the track Hu-Man.
The main idea behind Editlandia EP is to create a collection from a land of disco edits, Hu-man is born from an epic original tune by Brief Encounter from 1977. The vocals, rhythm and bassline are simply amazing and I knew that with a slightly retouched, it could become perfect for the dancefloor.
Tell us about a classic track that never leaves your record box.
If I have to prepare my records box for a party, the never-without tune is surely Sandy B – Make the world go round (Deep Dish mix). It’s a classic house banger that always works to destroy the dance floor and I never get tired of playing it.
Can you recommend any new music, something that you will be playing out when the world returns to some normality.
I can’t wait to play the forthcoming EP by The Funk District/Vagabundo club social, out soon on Saint Wax record. The guys made a good job and all the tunes are perfect for summer vibes.
Fernando from the Funk District is a good friend to the Hoof and there are two tracks on the Hoofs playlist currently, he has a bit of an aversion to Spotify so I help manage his Spotify account and have recently created a playlist featured on his profile called The Funk District and Friends
How have you kept busy during the last year has the pandemic stifled your creativity or the free time allowed you to experiment more.
During the pandemic period I had surely more time for my passions: listen and create new music and cook for my girl and my cat.
What’s the future hold for yourself, hope and dreams and all that.
For the future, I have a new EP coming out on an incredible label, after that, my goal for this year is to finally finish setting up my label with the first release.
Looking forward to shaking a hoof to the new music, thanks Paolo.
