Stello mixes sounds of old and new like listening to hazy vinyl through a modern day record player. It is music with the power of transportation that allows you to wander amongst decades that can only be experienced through memories. The kind that have nestled nicely into the sounds of Stello. Essences of memories like waltzing around Paris in the drizzling rain during the 1920s. Or perhaps a summer day spent wandering in Central Park during the 1970s. Places unknown to me yet impart the feeling of familiarity.
Beginning as the work of Kit Conway and now a collective of four other members - Stello is wrapped in sounds of old knitted blankets and sinks into you like the hours spent lounging on worn couch cushions - the ones tucked in the corner by the window of your favorite coffee shop dwelling. Kits voice is silky with a soft rasp and roughness that feels like worn edges on an old photograph. His voice can fill a song with emotions so palpable and intimate that they feel like your own.
“Pretty Things” is a song made to embody feelings that brew like a summer storm and are released through the fall of the following rain. Each piece of the arrangement observes the highs and lows as life ebbs and flows. With highs to match a bustling city corner and lows that slink in the moonlight of a quiet city alley. A song that introduces itself to the world like a sweet bird song in early morning sunlight. Like drops of water that grow restless and drip slowly off the leaves of high trees to replenish the ground once again. It builds and bursts with a bright and bold arrangement of brass bellowing instrumentals akin to yelling your love for another upon a rooftop. The sincerity of the song ends with grasping onto fickle feelings surrounding the moments of love lost and lost love. The remains of finding a home in thoughts that aren't your own until the thoughts are overgrown and it was only ever your own mind that you were able to completely confide in. Kit leaves you to bask in his last lyrics of longing…
I say what I mean when I'm torn at the sleeves
And I'm scared of the thought to be naked and clean
But I need to let you know
That I never quite let you go
And I need to tell you, I want to confide
I need you to know I'd try
A truly timeless song of love to be cherished through the ages.

About The Curator - Maria Fish
You can most often find Maria in her garden humming along to an eclectic playlist titled “Life’s a Garden, Dig It” and of course tending to her beloved plants. This garden is located on the island of Kaua’i at her childhood home surrounded by tropical fruit trees and flowers. Beautiful music has always gone hand in hand with the beauty of the island. Just as she nurtures her plants, she looks forward to nurturing this playlist and the community of music lovers that feel like stopping by and having a listen.
