Way It Goes – Hippo Campus

Melodic verse and catchy hook with a chorus you can sing and dance all night to. This song embodies an easy going ‘driving down the west coast with the sunset in the background’ vibe.

Keep Going – The Revivalists

This song has scat singing in it. Need I say any more?

It starts out with a cool piano and soulful vocals. Before you know it, you are sucked into the catchy beat as soon as the drums drop in. With a powerful horn section, scratchy guitars, and amazing vocals. David Shaw (lead singer) can really belt it.

Gimme All Your Love – Alabama Shakes

Right from the beginning, this song will grab your attention. Strong to soft in the blink of an eye, yet it all feels so right. Brittany Howard’s vocals are one of a kind and are truly out of this world.

The combination of organ/keys with the powerful vocals is something that few bands can really harness, and the Alabama Shakes are one of them.

Turtle Soup – Wagon Christ Mix – DJ Food

Ever heard of the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon?  You know what it is even if you didn’t know what it was called – it’s the thing where someone mentions a type of car and suddenly you see that type of car everywhere.  It’s the frequency illusion and it’s really cool – you can read a better summary of it here.

Antartica II – Prince Jelleh

Sometimes grief is debilitating – it takes away from you – your hope, your desire, your demeanor – and yet sometimes – it fills you with an energy that you just have to express.  We’ve all been there – shouting at people who don’t deserve it (particularly ourselves!) driving too quickly or barely stopping before we put a fist through the wall.  And yet – so long as we don’t actually hurt anybody – I’m a huge fan of this kind of energy.

How Long – Ace

“How Long” by 1970s British rock group Ace was the band’s highest charting hit, reaching #3 in the U.S. It had a slow, smoky groove like another Brit band hit, the Climax Blues Band’s “Couldn’t Get It Right.” It’s been kept alive not only by frequent airplay, but by a plethora of covers. From soul songster Bobby Womack to country chanteusse Barbara Mandrell to rock royalty Rod Stewart. The song lends itself to a voice that’s rough like sandpaper, yet smooth as satin. All of the notable covers do it justice, but Ace’s version remains ace.

Hallelujah – Brian Crain

“The forth, the fifth, the minor fall, the major lift” and yes, this probably is half of the magic in this track, probably, one of the most covered songs in the world. The melody is haunting, simple, soothing, relaxing, but at the same time powerful. Can talk directly to your soul.

Nerve – Jordan Rakei

Karbeyaz – Palmiyeler

Palmiyeler (The Palms) is an indie, alternative and psychedelic band from Turkey. Unlike many Turkish bands, they avoid fancy lyrics and serious topics. Their success is in this: they manage to make simple lyrics sound profound. Their integration of lyrics is very effective.

Thought U Wuz Nice (Instrumental) – Phife Dawg / J Dilla

A member of legendary hip hop group A Tribe Called Quest, Phife Dawg died in 2016, but left an interesting solo work too. His 1999 EP “Bend Ova / Thought u wuz nice” was produced by J. Dilla (also a hip hop icon, gone 10 years before Phife) and contains pearls such as this track.

Lower Worlds – Rainer Maria

German poet Rainer Maria Rilke belongs to the great minds of European literature and lyricism. He grew up an only child, his older sister having died only a week after his mother gave birth to her. She tried to cope with that pain by dressing young René (he would change his name later) as a girl. His history, and the gender ambiguity of the name, was one of the reasons the band Rainer Maria was inspired by.
