Happy Xmas (War is Over) by John & Yoko and The Plastic Ono Band

The culmination of two years of peace activism by John Lennon and his wife Yoko Ono, Happy Xmas (War is Over) is a perennial Christmas singalong that started life with the very specific aim of reminding the world, at a time of peace and good will to all men, that war is a choice.

Montara – Bobby Hutcherson

Bobby Hutcherson was a great jazz vibraphonist, one of the many great artists we lost last year. “Montara” is from Hutcherson’s album of the same name, released in 1975 on the jazz label Blue Note. Montara is also a city in Northern California, where he lived with his wife until his passing last year.

At All – KAYTRANADA

Kaytranada’s At All was my first introduction to the future bass genre and the first time a genuinely enjoyed house music. This song singlehandedly made Kaytranada a cult favorite and a one of the OG’s of the future bass genre. Everyone wanted to be Kaytra, everyone had a house song but nobody had that Kaytranada flair. His swing and basslines were unmatched and those classic Kaytra synths couldn’t be replicated.

Mirage – Platon Emil & Stefan Nixdorf feat. Landry Cantrell & Kristen Hicks

What’s the point in Saving the World! if the world isn’t worth saving? I think we all have days where we think everything is so completely fucked up that to try and change anything is pointless.

The Lazy Song – Bruno Mars

This week’s track is by one of my all-time favorite artists – Bruno Mars. Guys, I can’t tell you how badly I’ve needed this track this week. I just came back from a mini vacation in the city of Los Angeles. The seventy degree weather and sunny skies almost tricked me into thinking it was May back here in the Midwest.

The Dealer – Bro Safari & UFO!

It’s a beautiful day on the beach.  The sun is shining, the water is peaceful.  Time for a swim.  The water caresses your skin as you glide through the currents.

Something grazes your foot, perhaps some seaweed.  Suddenly, a pain shoots up your leg like a fire in a wall cavity.  A bullet of venom is shot from a translucent organic pistol straight up into the sole of your foot.

Mercedes Baby – Tyga Feat. 24 Hrs

This week on the Music to Soundtrack Souls Playlist is a joint called “Mercedes Baby” by rappers Tyga featuring 24 Hrs. I chose this simply because of the vibe on the track. Its off Tygas mixtape entitled “Bugatti Raww” and It has this mystical type of feel to it.

Poppin’ My Collar – Three 6 Mafia

When you listen to hip hop in the south right now there is a sound that seems to be heard in a lot of the new generation artist. This sound seems to be getting hatted on quite a bit by some that feel hip hop should sound a certain way or be portrayed a particular way. What a lot of them don’t realize is this sound has been around in the south long before the generation and artist they try to give the credit to and has been done very well on top of that.

Lorraine – Big Thief

Life is fleeting, like a beautiful moment. This song is like life, a precious second of existence that just captivates you deeply and then it’s gone, forever, as fast as it came.

We go back to being us for a moment, passing through the night and listening to its silence, joined by the soft and embracing sound of Adrianne Lenker’s voice and guitar.

Tacoma – Caitlyn Smith

The bad news: At one point in your life, if you haven’t already, you will experience heartbreak. The good news: You are stronger than you think and you will survive. It just takes time, and in the case of “Tacoma” by Caitlyn Smith, lots and LOTS of space… like thousands of miles worth. Unfortunately, I don’t think my little silver Honda Civic would have taken me clear across the country when I experienced one of the worst heartbreaks of my life, but it’s good to know that a green Chevrolet, according to Caitlyn, will do the job.

God Bless – Maino Feat. Fat Joe & Fresh

The Self Proclaimed “King Of Brooklyn” Maino has just rereleased some heat for the streets.

The song “God bless” is an ode to all the haters that wanna stop him from doing what he’s supposed to be doing out here on these streets of New York which is staying fly getting all the woman and keeping those licks coming in which is another way of saying ” Im getting money”.
