Part 3 – Given Circumstances

The two chimneys belch smoke and the ICI building’s shrouded in smog as I try to start dad’s old Ford Anglia on the morning of the interview. The engine turns over several times before the spark fires; a cloud of exhaust from the back. The grimy terraces are still festooned with red, white and blue after the Jubilee celebrations and parties.

Mum’s getting ready for another day, tying her headscarf. ‘I wish you’d had a haircut; and allowed me to sew that badge on properly. It’s not straight is it?’ She shakes her head. ‘Put your headlights on then. Have you checked the oil?’…

To Be Alone – Hozier

I’ll be honest, back in 2013 when Hozier put out his self-titled (and only) album, I was turned off by how just how big Take Me To Church got; boy was I missing out. Every single song on this record is incredible, and his voice has an intimate grit to it. If you haven’t really listened to it, you need to right now.

Pretty Pimpin – Kurt Vile

This week we have “Pretty Pimpin” from the incomparable “Kurt Vile” former guitarist for “The War on Drugs”.

I first heard this a few years back ,out on the road, and just loved the Indie/roots flavour it has going on, but it was actually the lyric that got me and reminded me of “Paul Kelly’s” “Look so Fine but Feel so Low”  so don’t be fooled by it’s catchy facade…

Freedom ’90 – George Michael

From the Listen without Prejudice album, George Michael’s Freedom ’90 tells a story of breaking free from a way of thinking, a way of being. This freedom is true, he must make his own choices and, be his priority.   Beautiful inside and out, we are all better for him being in the world, for he followed his heart.

Delorean Dynamite – Todd Terje

Miami Vice is back!!! I mean c’mon, this guy is simply a genius!! It could be Tron meets Nightrider or something, however

I can totally see myself riding a futuristic motorcycle in the neon lights of the city and be an agent on the hunt for… well, that is in your phantasy to decide, but mine is huge in this case and the lust for a nightly adventure is simply of the charts!!

Half Mast – Empire of the Sun

The sound feels a bit like in the good old 1980’s, when love was so much simpler, ha ha. This is one of my favorite ‘Empire Of The Sun’ songs, it’s so romantic, melancholic and dramatic – a couple is fighting, and he tries to get her back. It feels almost like when Prince was trying to get his girl back in Purple Rain and I mean, which women doesn’t want that?!

Genesis – Grimes

When you are with Grimes, especially with this track, you are in the world of the etheric, the phantasy, of beauty, of fairytales, of the other spheres and also – of gaming. The sound is dramatic, girly and yet so strong.

Cuantos Pasos? – Zurdok

With A Little Help From My Friends – Joe Cocker

Ignite Me – Anna Straker

Latch – Disclosure

I have to admit that I am a real sucker for this track! It reminds me of my times in London, where I was diving into the musical scene and discovering the variety that this great city has to offer. The sound has a real club music vibe to it and is so typical for the London sound, which I really love! It’s so damn sexy and who doesn’t love sexy songs?! The vid fits perfectly into all that…
