From the Listen without Prejudice album, George Michael’s Freedom ’90 tells a story of breaking free from a way of thinking, a way of being. This freedom is true, he must make his own choices and, be his priority. Beautiful inside and out, we are all better for him being in the world, for he followed his heart.
This week Australia took a big step forward, legalising marriage between Same Sex Couples, with some strings attached. Couple’s must now give a month’s notice of intention to marry prior to an official ceremony taking place. Still a big step.
The cycle of freedom has evolved through fear, ignorance, anger, frustration, judgement and tolerance, to something else, acknowledgement, recognition and acceptance.
The country was asked to vote a simple yes or no, to put forward their wants and needs, regarding some else’s life. Australia voted Yes, and in a way has collectively demonstrated that we do want to support each other, and our individual freedoms. My friends 5 year old daughter summed it up, when considering that this issue would be voted on she said, “What has this got to do with us?”. As usual, the youngest person in the room sees through the bullshit, the inequality, the assumption that one person can know what is better for another.
When I voted yes I had mixed feelings, that I could have any say in how another can live their life, commit themselves to another or choose how to publicly show themselves was a disgrace. On the other hand, seeing the state of attitudes in the past, fearful, self-righteous, handing responsibility over to others, it meant movement, change from these attitudes. I had hope, we were moving forward.
So much strength is accessed when we move ourselves through this cycle of freedom. When we seek freedom for ourselves, inside and out, we must begin with acknowledgment of our own feelings, and ask “What do I want?”, not from our head but our heart. Learning how to feel and know the answer. Through practice of asking, hearing and feeling. We become connected to ourselves, the truth of who we are, and create more meaningful connections with ourselves, our life and others, we find a freedom.

About the Curator: Erin Murray
Erin, a Mother of 1 little man and wife to 1 big man has learnt much about herself in the past few years. After moving from the city to the bush (near the Ocean), there weren’t as many distractions as she had become accustomed to, in a smaller community she lost her anonymity and slowly began to become aware of herself, her feelings, the life she had created for herself and her relationships with others. Seeking change from the feelings and behaviors which had become her normal, she sought out methods to do just that. Slowly at first, then a bit more and a bit more she is becoming aware of what she actually wants for herself and has begun removing the things that aren’t that, inside and out. Learning about faith (not religionJ), fun and how to be gentle with herself and others along the way.

How does wisdom come to us? How do we become, wise?
We are so many versions of ourselves in a lifetime. Can we see each version and honour it, thank it and move on? Knowing that each version brought us to here and now, knowing that we did the best we could at the time, and if we didn’t we learnt from it…
