God Rest Ye Merry, Gentlemen – Robert Dixon

It’s that time of year where the planet gets together to celebrate the shortest day and the promise of a returning spring.  Amazingly enough it appears that many religions – by sheer coincidence – have significant events at this time too!  The different faiths have their own holidays and dates but the big daddy at this time of year – the one that half the planet will be celebrating – is Christmas – the birth of Jesus.

Nude – Radiohead

The human body. Everyone has one, yet when we picture one we have so many different thoughts and emotions. A nude body is us in our most vulnerable state, open to the world around for for all to see. Theres nothing hiding us, it’s full exposure and theres something very intimate about that. Enter Radiohead’s Nude, oddly enough a very intimate and vulnerable piece that seems to sway as if it were in the wind. The beautiful strings give an elevated sense to to the sung vocal melody. And that baseline is so mesmerizing!

Yes Baby Yes – Mo’ Horizons

I like this song, it’s simple, easy to listen to, and understand.  That is how yes is, a real yes is simple, and easy to say.  It doesn’t start in your head though, a real yes starts in your body.  It is different for everyone, you can find your yes feeling by saying it, yes, yes, yes, yes, yes.  Say it until you can feel it in your body, where is it? What does it feels like?  When you know what a real yes feels like, you will know the real answer to a yes or no question.

As Of Late – Insightful and Naji

This song holds a strong sense of passion and draws on the listener to engage on the emotion poured in by both the the producer (Insightful) and singer (Naji).

All I Know – Wize

For years I have been a huge fan of this producer, and even now this is by far my favourite from him. I feel this song is a prime example of breaking the rules.

Waiting For The Sun – The Doors

The opening lines of this classic Doors track deal with what is perhaps the greatest weakness of man. We are constantly looking for optimal life, something better – our Garden of Eden.

At first flash of Eden
We race down to the sea

Ooh La La – Rod Stewart

This is an old Faces track, but as good as the original is with Ronnie Lane on vocals, the definitive version of “Ooh La La” is by far the one by Rod Stewart. This revamped version of “Ooh La La” can be found on Rod’s strong “When We Were The New Boys” album from the late 1990s, an album that finds Rod in great shape and form and is consequently filled with excellent songs and vocals.

Walls – Circus – Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers

I remember the first time I heard “Walls.” It was Christmas Eve 1996 and I was on my way to spend Christmas with family when somebody rear ended me at a stoplight that must have been no more than a block away from my aunt’s house. As other drivers were calling their insurance companies and yelling at each other, I crawled back into my car that now looked like somebody had used it to teach parallel parking in a war zone somewhere.

This Is Your Time – Michael W. Smith

I must admit, I do not like the concept of Christian rock. In my mind, it’s an oxymoron – there is usually something very unchristian about a rock band hitting the road and going about their business! Given this attitude, perhaps it is only fitting that there is really only one artist from this genre that I listen to and truly admire: Michael W. Smith.

Was There Anything I Could Do? – The Go-Betweens

Even if they never really got the recognition they deserved, the Australian Go-Betweens are simply one of the best rock groups of all time. As their fans know, they recorded many great songs during their career but the reason why I keep returning  to “Was There Anything I Could Do?” so very often is because it’s not just one their best songs; it’s one of the best pop/rock tracks out there – and what’s more, it’s timeless.

Shake Me Down – Broken Witt Rebels

Released in 2017, this song really helped the band Broken Witt Rebels hit the charts and increase their presence as a true kick ass blues/soul rock band.

Come a Little Closer – Cage The Elephant

This song was released as the first single from Cage the Elephant’s third album, Melophobia. “I wrote the verse at the airport, inspired by the thought of things appearing different at first and then seeing them in a new light,” Shultz continued…
