10 tracks to dance around the idea of space travel – from the human perspective – organized from most danceable to least, ‘cos – well – you know…
10 Songs for space adventurers:
Major Tom (Coming Home) – Peter Schilling
Lyrically it’s probably the most on the nose song about space travel but who can deny the juicy chorus that soars like a perfect second stage burn into the stratosphere. A one hit wonder that leaves us wanting more.
O Astronauta de Mármore – Nenhum de Nós
Featured first on “Sounds Like David Bowie“
Space Walk – Lemon Jelly
While Bowie’s Space Oddity does a fabulous job of creating theatre around the idea of going into space and of course the rather sad end to Major Tom – Lemon Jelly goes in the other direction – taking the real audio from astronaut Ed White’s spacewalk and setting it to music. Unlike the doomed Major – our real life astronaut is blown away by the beauty of space and returns very much alive – one of my favorite tracks to listen to when I need a pick me up and reminder that damn, the universe is amazing.
Space Song – Beach House
When I listen to this song I imagine this is what floating around in space feels like. Beach House guides you through an emotional journey here. When you’re surrounded by stars and miles and miles of endless space just imagine this song will be playing.
I just discovered a bunch of fan made videos of this song to clips of space Odyssey and Interstellar 🚀 This definitely fits playing in any space movie
Walking To Aldebaran – Hat’s Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate
“Inspired by the novel by Adrian Tchaikovsky, the track is sung from the perspective of an astronaut who is turned into a monster by a well meaning but malfunctioning ancient alien machine.”
Another prog rock classic from Malcolm under his Hats Off Gentlemen It’s Adequate project. Lot’s going on with many musical nods to space tracks that came before 🙂
Spaceman – Artificial Joy Club
AJC’s lead vocalist, Louise Reny (p/k/a Sal), creates a composite of an astronaut, asking him to bring her down from a party high. The song deftly weaves references to the higher plain while the victim pleads for him to provide a lifeline to safety.
Space Oddity – David Bowie
I mean – you can’t have this list and not have this track – it needs to be in here if for no other reason to reflect on Lemon Jelly’s Space Walk ;-p
Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun – Pink Floyd
Not necessarily a track about space, but pretty spacy all the same. This feels like the soundtrack for a late 50’s analogue launch from the Baikonur Cosmodrome that may or may not bring the cosmonauts back home. Pink Floyd never disappoint when you’re planning a trip, whatever kind that may be.😉
Taijin Kyofusho – The Evpatoria Report
“The Evpatoria Report’s song “Taijin Kyofusho” is an instrumental track based on the last conversation between Shuttle Columbia Commander Rick Husband and the mission control station at Houston during their flight over the United States on February 1st, 2003. The song captures the contemplative silence that came after their last exchange, and serves as a sad yet somber reminiscence of the flight. The track reflects the solemn mood in which the crew’s fateful end was accepted and internalized, ultimately culminating in the call honoring their memory when they failed to respond.”
First featured in “Love Is A Rollercoaster”
Always Forgetting with You (The Bridge Song) – Spiritualized
This was kind of obvious to me. We listened to “The Space Project” album a lot when I met my wife. Back then I was living in an attic room of a London shared apartment. Only a couple of rooftop window to watch the sky. But with this album everything was borderless.
And while it can get pretty depressing – the whole danger and blowing up aspect of space travel – we thought we’d leave you with this rather brilliant piece of optimism ;-p
I.S.S. (Is Somebody Singing) – Chris Hadfield and Barenaked Ladies
