So I’m going through a phase where the words aren’t exactly coming easy - shocker Huh?! I bet none of you have ever experienced anything like it.
Insert sarcastic smiley face here!
When I find myself in this place it’s all about starting - no matter what comes out, I have to sit - open the window and begin typing and eventually things start to flow. It doesn’t always work straight away - last week’s write up on the Music to grieve To list took me four days of slogging through it - but I’m glad I did as I’m rather happy with the end result.
In this space I’m looking for short form repetitive drone music - something that delivers an instantly recognizable theme and repeats fairly quickly. I can immediately associate the music with the process of “beginning” of “starting” - I’m not looking for something long form that I can get lost in - it’s purely about the cognitive cue to break inertia and get rolling.
I’ve had Meditation on my candidates list since the middle of June and it’s never felt right until this week - and that’s probably ‘cos it’s only the last week or so where I’ve been struggling. I’d kept it on there as I knew it had a function but couldn’t work out what it was - until today.
So here we are - if you’re struggling to get started and looking for a musical assist - take these 3 minutes 18 seconds of music out for a spin - stick it on repeat until those bell tones create the perfect environment to start writing…

About the Curator: Andrew McCluskey
The first visual memory I have is that of the white upright piano in Singapore, Hell and the Dark Forces lived at the bottom, Heaven and the Angels at the top, they would play battles through my fingers and I was hooked.
As a psychology graduate I studied how sound affects human performance.
As a musician I compose instrumental music that stimulates your brain but doesn't mess with your language centers, leaving you free to be creative and brilliant without distraction.
As a curator I research how music can improve your life and create flow - I can tell you what music to listen to when studying for a test and why listening to sad music can make you feel better.
As the founder of musicto I’m on a mission to inspire a global audience of music lovers and artists through the development of people powered playlists.

But as I’ve moved from ideation to manifestation, the energy of the playlist needed to change – solo piano is good for thinking – but 8 minutes of 130 bpm edm is great for getting things down

So if you’ve been listening to the playlist recently you know what’s coming. Last week’s track was all about setting the intent for change – away from the more relaxing ideation space of solo instrumentation to this week’s electronic track from Cristoph, Yotto and Sansa.

I’ve known for a while that the feel of the list was going to change – while piano instrumentals are perfect for reflection and ideation – at some point you need some energetic input to get your fingers moving.
