Where To Start With Chuggin Edits on Spotify
Chuggin Edits is back with a seriously catchy re-edit, familiar to many from the sub sub track ‘Ain’t no Use’ it’s recently picked up by Craig Charles and has been used as the intro to his Funk & Soul show on BBC 6 music.
The Sub Sub track itself used a sample from a 1979 Disco track Good Morning Starshine which itself was a cover of the iconic 60’s track from the stage production of Hair and originally sung by Jill O’Hara and the company it was also a US top 10 hit by solo artist Oliver, listen to the tracks and you’d never guess they are going to influence a new edit in 2020 no less a dance hit of the 1990s.
So back to 1979 towards the end of Disco’s peak New York producer Walter Schatz put together a four-track album called Disco Spectacular, inspired by the movie version of Hair and featuring a singer who started out with a six week run on the broadway production Vickie Sue Robinson, famed for 1976 grammy nominated song Turn the Beat Around, Vickie was heard singing in a studio by Walter and rightly believing she had a voice suited to disco, they went on to produce music together off and on until the mid-eighties.
A more significant contribution to the album was from the talents of two relatively unknown male vocal groups The Brothers and Revelation (one of which, not clear who contributed to Good Morning Starshine), Also the talents of Evelyn Champagne King (Shame) and New York Community choir, the gospel group also produced by Walter Schatz and who’s legacy is ‘I’ll Keep a Light in my Window’ favourite of both David Mancuso and Larry Levan and many new disco fans after the retrospective musical discoveries in the late ’90s of two of dance music’s most influential figures. Warren himself went on to have lasting career and great influence in the music industry with senior positions at RCA working with Hall and Oates, Ariola records where he signed Viola Wills, created record label Perfect Sound Studios working again with Vickie Sue Robinson on Prelude, a period at Tommy Boy, currently VP at Penalty Entertainment, the classic hip hop label who have released tracks from Lord Finesses and The Beatnuts.
Chuggin Edits (aka Gary Poulter) is an English DJ and joint owner of the label Slightly Transformed. He has a passion for all things Disco, Funk & Soul and is best known for the track Runway Gurl, the super cool re-work of the Linda Clifford Disco classic Runaway Love which is racing towards 1 million streams on Spotify. The track soon caught the attention of BBC Radio 6 Music’s Craig Charles and the Chuggin Edits sound has been a staple of the show ever since.
Chuggz has worked with a number of hot labels over the years including Masterworks Music, Alpaca Edits, Midnight Riot and has recently signed a deal to work with Tropical Disco Records. He is currently working on a collection of tracks due to be released by his Slightly Transformed label throughout 2020 and beyond.
