The most epic groove exchange yet! Andie and Siavosh trade a bunch of tracks and get in that head-bopping zone! Press play and take it awaaaay!
The Coast by Kazy Lambist
I really love the electro/indie-pop vibe that this track gives off. It kinda sounds like something that would be in the future because of that cool ‘robotic’ feel to the vocals. Plus, the fact that the two artists are harmonizing that way is incredible. There are some tracks that you know just sound so different and sometimes kinda weird (in the best way), but it just works and this is one of them for me!
Deep Blue by Pozx, Le Lapin Blanc
“Deep Blue” by Pozx really takes you on a journey. Its floating vocals and atmospheric instruments put you right in the feeling of being lost out in the ocean, lonely, and wanting to find your way back to land. Pozx captures that emotion so well through the lyrics about drifting away from reality and needing a connection. The music builds nicely with reverb-drenched guitars and shimmery synths before opening up in the chorus, that airy vocal of La Lapin Blanc, and of course those electro grooves. It also keeps that melancholy vibe the whole time, so you feel what they’re singing about. No wonder the critics dug it – Pozx nails making a song that puts you in a specific mood, ya know? It takes you to that lonesome place. That track is definitely one of the standout singles from this young Iranian artist, for how it conveys that feeling of isolation through both the lyrics and the dreamy sound.
Floated By by Peter Cat Recording
Chill, mellow, fun, and bouncy – words that I’d definitely use to describe this. What got me aside from the chorus, was the element of the trumpet. Such a great addition! It carried the whole energy to something so soulful. The way the chorus is sung: “All I wanna be…is something so good…something so good…something so real” makes it feel like such a relatable thought.
Waves by Melt
“Waves” by the band Melt is a really moody, energetic track. The vocals just float on top all dreamy and emotive. The lyrics are about feeling past emotions and memories while picturing those old days by a wavy ocean. It builds up nicely and is cinematic with more layers piling in. By the end it really crashes like a big wave, all the instruments swirling around. The whole track just pulls you in like the ocean, now you know where they got their inspiration. No wonder people dug it – it really transports you with that lush, watery soundscape.
Is It My Love by Oh He Dead
Such addicting vocals! I’d say this is a soulful-pop tune, but the whole song is really so funky. I remember adding this because I started my day with this song and it gave me such a morning vibe – like something to get you in a good mood when you’re getting ready for the day.
Feel Good by Eric Benét by Faith Evans
Speaking of the morning vibe, I believe this song would be an excellent choice to kickstart the day. I vividly recall swaying to the grooves while preparing my coffee, and that’s when I decided to include this song. What could be better than beginning your day with a track titled ‘Feel Good,’ right? It’s a captivating R&B song performed by two talented artists in their fifties, delving into the transformative power of love. It beautifully captures the essence of a journey that becomes infinitely more enjoyable when shared with a beloved companion. If you can commence your day with such a mood, your life is bound to be filled with abundant fortune.
Walking in the Rain by Funkmammoth
A cool band name + awesome sample + beat and rain sounds? This goes craaazy. It’s like you can dance to it, nod your head to it, and just zone out with to it (I know I have). What’s so…ear-catching (lol) are the smooth beat switches. And even better, the song ends with these rain drops and the sound of birds – perfectly calming.
Since I by Jono McCleery
Since we are discussing the positive emotions and moods associated with being in love, listening to Jono could enhance the experience. Jono McCleery is an alternative artist who draws inspiration from Soul and Jazz music, but he has developed his own unique sound. While this particular track may not be as groovy as some others in the playlist, the electro/acoustic arrangements compensate for it. The combination of drum beats, gentle guitar touches, and his vocals create a perfect harmony that beautifully captures the transformative power of finding and cherishing someone special in one’s life.
The Keys by Matt Duncan
I remember hearing this for the first time and noticing its bass and catchy percussion. I’d describe this as 21st century jazz – the violin, the drums, his voice and backup vocals – I can picture it being played in this small jazz bar and everyone just nodding their head and tapping their feet. It’s interesting how genres can grow overtime and I find this to be the the perfect example. Matt Duncan has this way of making his songs stick to your head and play on loop.
I Love Being Here With You by Jacob Collier
The track that Andie added to the playlist got me contemplating about packing everything up and leaving, but then I recalled a song by Jacob Collier. It reminded me that no matter where you are, the only thing that truly matters is being with the person you love. The intricate vocal harmonies, complex rhythmic patterns, and subtle textures in the song create a warm, joyful, and energetic atmosphere.
Suddenly by Drugdealer by Weyes Blood
You know that moment when one song has this complete switch half way then he whole thing ends up sounding like two songs? This is exactly that. But first off, let’s just appreciate how great the band Drugdealer is. All the songs in their 2016 album, “The End of Comedy”, are a hit to me! The way they touch on life’s realities with such simple but thoughtful lyrics…and awesome beats, dancey- sounds, and arrangements is soooo spot on. This song sounds quite sad and makes you think, but when you get to the chorus and the switch half way, it’s like you just wanna dance. What a range of emotions if you’d ask me!
Mama Jay by Frizzy P & Mr Cole
I was thinking, why not switch things up in our playlist? So, I added a trip hop song by this duo band called Frizzy P & M. Cole. They’ve been working together as vocalist and producer since 2015. And let me tell you, from the moment the beat drops, you can’t help but get hooked on the infectious rhythm and catchy melodies. The beat is so lively and upbeat, with a mix of traditional and modern elements that give the song a really fresh and contemporary vibe.
BIG BROWN EYES by Benny Sings
Benny Sings’ voice is so unique. BIG BROW EYES was obviously the first song I heard by him and I immediately got hooked. The instrumental bit in the beginning and before the outro sold me. I find the arrangement and production of the song incredible. The intro, layered vocals, clever lyrics – it’s all just so perfect.
So We Won’t Forget by Khruangbin
When it comes to grooves, we can’t forget about these airplane guys . That’s where Khruangbin comes in, and let me tell you, Laura Lee on the bass is absolutely amazing! The guitar’s catchy melodies and the smooth, groovy, psychedelic beats of the drums just add to the magic. The band effortlessly transitions between sections, blending funk, soul, and even hints of Middle Eastern influences seamlessly. This track is definitely one of my favorites from the band. Their attention to detail and their ability to evoke nostalgia and emotion through their music is truly remarkable. What else can I say? Just sit back and enjoy!
Seabird by Alessi Brothers
After Siavosh added So We Won’t Forget by Khruangbin, Its peaceful and slow vibe moved me to add this late 90s song by the Alessi Brothers. I felt that it followed through so well because of the smooth vocals and “beach/outdoor/driving” energy I was getting from it. The song itself is something that I’ll never get tired of – It calms me down. And, I guess just the whole 90s spirit of it gets me hooked too!
Been Gone Too Long by Nicolette Larson
Let’s travel back to the 80s for some smooth pop country rock from Nicolette Larson. This song called “Been Gone Too Long” was originally released in 1977 but Nicolette’s cover in 1981 really struck a chord. Her warm, soulful voice draws you in and the sparse folk arrangement showcases her raw talent. As the song builds, the layered vocals create beautiful harmonies that take the emotion to another level. By the end, you really feel what she’s pouring into the performance. Nicolette brought the lyrics to life in a way that still resonates today
Back on 74 by Jungle
Funny enough, I completely missed this song when I was listening to the whole album. I found it again since I noticed that its dance from the music video was a trend on social media. I’d say this is the definition of funk its production is wilddd, such a feel good and addicting song. I feel that the only right way to listen to this would be with some headphones for that ‘ulitmate experience’.
Downtown by Adam Naas
So I was just moving with my headphones on after that last song ended. Glad I didn’t take then off yet cause the next one started up right away. This dude Adam Naas comes in singin “Come dance with me, we are not that shallow.” Already I’m feelin the good vibes. See this track is called “Downtown” and it just puts you in a good mood from the jump. Got that bouncy instrumentation and Adam’s smooth vocals are perfect for it. But what really stood out is the catchy as hell chorus – “Time after time downtown …” is definitely gonna be stuck in my head all day. You can tell he really lets his talent shine on that part too. The production keeps it polished without losing the raw energy. It’s clear this Adam Naas knows how to craft a perfect pop song to get you movin. Dude’s definitely got a gift for catchy tunes.
Won’t You Come Over by Devendra Banhart
Songs with those little details are so unique and interesting to me! The arrangement of this American-Venezuelan artist’s song is so light and the addition of those little background instruments bring it all together. I’d say that there are some alternative/indie love songs that are quite predictable, like you can sense some pattern, but I have to say, this one surprised me and got me moving with its sway-full vibe.
I’m Into You by Chet Faker
This Chet Faker’s song grabs you from the start with those smooth guitar licks. His laidback vocals are a perfect match for the retro-modern soundscape.
The lyrics describe a real attraction and chemistry in an understated way. When he sings “When I press an ear up to your breast, I can hear the rhythm start, It’s hard to tell our beats apart” – wow, just wow.
He lets the music do most of the talking while his delivery draws you in. The production is rich and layered, from the instrumentation to the bass and drums blended together so well without being overdone. You can really see his talent for crafting catchy songs with soul on full display. “I’m Into You” has stayed a favorite all this time because of how effortlessly cool it is, that groove you can’t resist, and how it instantly puts a smile on your face. True modern classic.
Gimme All Your Love by Alabama Shakes
Just powerful! Brittany Howard’s voice is just immaculate – the range it can go is insane. The song itself depicts that deep feeling of love and you really feel it with the merge of the instruments. This is such a solid rock vibe and if it’s your first time hearing it, you’d get quite surprised. Wish I could listen to this for the first time!
Sweat & Tears by Asaf Avidan by The Mojos
Asaf Avidan is one of my favorite artists. His singing and music are really good. I like to end my playlists of songs with his music. He has a rough but soulful voice that works well with his bluesy folk style. You can feel the emotion and experience in his voice. The band The Mojos behind him work really well together.
As the song builds up, he hits really high notes that surprise me every time, even though I’ve heard it before. The guitars, keys, and rhythm all blend together nicely. The strings add just the right depth. By the end when the guitars are wailing loudly, Asaf gives everything vocally. The screams and high notes give me chills. You can see how in control he is on stage and how musical he is.
The song always sticks with me after as an emotional journey. It’s no wonder so many people connect with it. Asaf Avidan is truly a gifted artist – there’s no one better to end a playlist with.
