Sadness is the most underrated emotion and often the most unwanted. The expression “Don’t be Sad” is bandied around like a punctured prophylactic when instead we could be listening and demonstrating true empathy.
Sadness is a reflection of our humanity - a response to loss proportionate in depth to its preceding attachment. When the precedent is love - profound sadness is the price you pay. To deny that experience is to diminish the validity of the love you gave - and giving love is never a bad thing.
To all of you who have loved and lost this year - I congratulate you on your daring and commiserate with you over your loss.
If you find yourself alone in the next few weeks - maybe in the wee dark hours or perhaps out in the world, cocooned inside earbuds, put this track on repeat. As the music starts, allow yourself to remember, allow yourself to fully experience the loss, to fully experience the sadness - but then - when you’re ready - maybe when the tears have dried - take a moment to remember the love.
Remind yourself of the amazing memories - the ones that involuntarily make you smile - allow yourself to feel the joy - let it fill your heart - and just hold it - hold it for as long as you can - for as long as the piano and strings create the perfect vessel in which to experience this.
And as the notes fade away - as you come back to earth - recognize this new feeling for what it is. Neither good nor bad - nor happy or sad - but human, and alive and evocative of love.
I wish you a fabulous 2020.

About the Curator: Andrew McCluskey
The first visual memory I have is that of the white upright piano in Singapore, Hell and the Dark Forces lived at the bottom, Heaven and the Angels at the top, they would play battles through my fingers and I was hooked.
I’ve been fascinated by music ever since.
As a psychology graduate I studied how sound affects human performance.
As a musician I compose instrumental music that stimulates your brain but doesn't mess with your language centers, leaving you free to be creative and brilliant without distraction.
As a curator I research how music can improve your life and create flow - I can tell you what music to listen to when studying for a test and why listening to sad music can make you feel better.
As the founder of musicto I’m on a mission to inspire a global audience of music lovers and artists through the development of people powered playlists.

But as I’ve moved from ideation to manifestation, the energy of the playlist needed to change – solo piano is good for thinking – but 8 minutes of 130 bpm edm is great for getting things down

So if you’ve been listening to the playlist recently you know what’s coming. Last week’s track was all about setting the intent for change – away from the more relaxing ideation space of solo instrumentation to this week’s electronic track from Cristoph, Yotto and Sansa.

I’ve known for a while that the feel of the list was going to change – while piano instrumentals are perfect for reflection and ideation – at some point you need some energetic input to get your fingers moving.
