Retreat! Back to 1976 when funk-soul recording sessions were pure hot fire. Roy Ayers is certainly atop the list of musical heroes in history that transitioned gracefully from the jazz world over to funk. The Ubiquity catalog from the 70's and 80's has so many treasures that groove, but "Ain't Your Sign" speaks volumes with only one lyric. Don't let your horoscope in the local print media define you, because your mind is much stronger. To pair such sage guidance with such heavy synth and guitar lines on a latin funk landscape is a thing of pure artistry. Style.
The band and production on this tune is so fly. Listen...John "Shaun" Solomon is putting on a funk bass clinic back there. The Groove You Playlist was not intended to feature a lot of vintage material, but you cannot ignore this stuff. There was just something in the water back then. The recording studios were like special clubs, and only the rawest of chillers were allowed to come in and put it down on tape. Roy Ayers Ubiquity always set the bar high.
