You never know what it is about a track that will get you, but sampling Barack Obama on mental illness sure does make the intro stand out. Having had my attention caught I found myself more and more drawn to this unique track.
It’s beautifully different – raw and authentic with funky elements of broken glass and erratic percussion, and where some people might worry about overall production quality, all my ears do is fall into the warmth that is Tom Khan’s voice. Empathically positioned, occasionally supported by subtly placed harmonies, he sings a lyric that will resonate with anyone who’s gone through the anxiety /. depression cycle.
It’s the kind of track that when you’re down and all you want is someone or something else to be down with you – then yeah – this is the track for you.
Here’s an insight into where the track came from:
“Sometimes we all just have to be sad and part of getting to a better place is to face depression/anxiety. I’m not a therapist but music – to me – is a way of expressing what I’m feeling and it helps. I’m not ‘diagnosed’ with anxiety/depression but I think it’s so important to let it out once in a while and understand that what everyone goes through is relatable and that there are other people out there with the same issue and, it will become better.
This track was hard for me to write/produce emotionally and I’m a very new artist (first song). It is ‘pop’ song (if I were to put a genre name to it) and it’s for times when you’re driving or sitting down or lying down staring at nothing and just feeling all the emotions. It’s a song to vibe to but not upbeat – it’s deep.”
