“I don’t care what they say / I just care what I do / I guess I’ll never know / What anyone’s going through / Except me / Accept me.” Those lyrics excerpted from the chorus of “Accept Me” by Electric Sol (Ed Sweet) are filled with incredible emotion. Hearing and reading such potent words, it’s hard not to put yourself in a particular situation, where you felt put down, made to feel small, and totally unaccepted and disrespected. The relatable theme of this groovy, pop-soul record instantly piqued my interest. Electric Sol seeks to atone for abuse, bullying, and pain, that can occur in a variety of relationships. Specifically, the artist keys in on unaccepting parents as the catalyst for pain.
Parents often object to their children to some extent. That’s understandable in a high percentage of cases and situations. However, when the objection goes way too far left of center, the repercussions can be devastating. In this case, Electric Sol paints a picture where everything he does is an utter failure in his parent’s eyes. “Chasing rainbows / You’ll never find / That pot of gold,” he sings on the first verse, sharing the criticisms he’s received. A similar scenario happens on the second verse, even more overt to be honest:
“Gotta live life
The way you’re supposed to
Cuz if you don’t
We might just disown you.”
That’s where the line is clearly crossed. The protagonist ultimately realizes he’s got to be true to self and not allow such negativity to break him down and destroy him. With the rest of the chorus, he demands acceptance, and vows to reciprocate it. There are so many takeaways here. Obviously, no one should be made to feel undervalued or threatened to be disowned or unaccepted. Parents everywhere should take the time to hear out their children as opposed to write them off, let alone disown them.
