“Although I lost you / I, I’ll always want you / ‘Cause you take me high.” Clearly, matters of the heart have Snoh Aalegra ‘some type of way’ on “Lost You.” The Swedish-born Iranian musician has ‘lost’ her lover yet can’t ignore the best aspects of their relationship. Throughout this Temporary Highs in the Violet Skies highlight, she’s atoning for loss, reminiscing about the best moments within a relationship. That loss encompasses drifting apart, as well as the ultimate end. In the relationship captured narratively, there’s atonement for what ails, through the persuasiveness of her lover. Ultimately, it’s insufficient atonement to sustain.
On the first verse, Snoh paints a portrait of negative changes. These changes cause her to take pause; she exhibits feelings of confusion in the relationship. “You and I was no debating,” she sings, continuing, “Now it’s up for conversation.” On the pre-chorus, there’s ‘atonement,’ via her lover’s words (“But then you say what I wanna hear”) and the bedroom (“Said, wasn’t gon’ spend the night / Here I am, right back with you”). Is it pyrite? Probably, but this push and pull continues with the second verse. Here, Aalegra is drawn to this lover, despite red flags. She’s too forgiving because she’s consumed with love.
“Lost You” is relatable to anyone who has loved and lost. Aalegra wants things to continue with her lover, even post-relationship, although she relies on her heart as opposed to head. There’s no resolution within this song – no life changing ‘atonement.’ In the moment, however, remembering good atones for loss to some degree.
