So we get a lot of track submissions in the general inbox at musicto.com. Plus, we get people pitching the inbox directly. I’d seen Chris – the artist behind Melo Green – submit tracks in various genres. But it wasn’t really until I started listening to Laminar Flow, the new album he’s got out, that it hit me – dude is FRESH!
The first half of the album – each track took me somewhere new. Sure it felt recognizable in the R&B, Indie, Singer-songwriter kind of vein – but it just felt like a different, fresh take. The track that wouldn’t leave my ears is the one we’re spotlighting today – Colors.
It’s so unique. Just the vocal stacking on it alone is fantastic, and his vocal presence is so powerful. Production-wise, the way he brings in the crunchy guitar in the second half is such an insane yet inspired choice because it creates something so different and noticeable for the track. And of course the lyrical content – Jesus, the dude got fucked over ;-p. Of course that’s how shit happens, isn’t it? You get fucked over and then you produce an amazing piece of art. I mean, I wish it wasn’t like that; it’d be great if we could produce amazing art without the trials and tribulations that cause its genesis. But I guess the world would just be a very dull place at that point, wouldn’t it?
So, Chris, thank you for getting fucked over – not having a lot of luck in relationships – and then turning the experience into something super cool & super fresh ;-ppppp And, as we always do in Spotlight Sessions, we have sent Chris, our ridiculous questions that we hope gave him some pause for thought.

Name one song, or album, other than your own, that you would recommend to listeners. Why this one?
lately I’ve been listening to My 21st Century Blues by Raye.
her voice is sensational and the lyricism and character of her dialogue between songs are really fun.
What are you curious about at the moment? Why?
I’m curious about what it might be like to live in a car and tour. some good friends of mine spent 4 years living in a bus and so i might want to follow in their footsteps soon. kinda like tiny house but in an old greyhound bus kinda thing.
If you had $2,500 to spend on music marketing, where would you spend it and why?
I would buy 200 vinyl records and give 10 of them away for free.
If you could summon one musician back from the dead to collaborate with, who would it be? Why? What do you think you would create?
definitely Prince. i’ve been regularly speaking to him for answers lately. i often think, what would Prince be like if he came back as a rapper? that’s all for now. Gotta keep the rest between me and him until my next album release.
What is a piece of music that has changed you?
Bitches Brew by Miles Davis. it’s got all the answers you won’t find in the trappings of convention. he was bending the spoon long before neo.
What wavelength are you on? How can other people get on that wavelength?
i’m into gamma waves, and the key of F because allegedly it’s the green key. you can get there by gravitating towards meditation and peace of mind. read Thich Nhat Ahn and Ram Das and pray to Black Jesus, and refer to the wind as God.
What do you think of Nick Cave’s response to an AI-generated track “in the style of Nick Cave”?
i think he’s mad the algorithm figured out his formula. i say the end is inevitable and we might as well use AI as a tool while it’s still unregulated by E-Tron Dusk. if your creativity is so fragile that you feel threatened by or the need to chastise an algorithm i think there’s some inner work to be done. i truly believe the creativity of the human spirit is infinite and prolific and while algorithms and AI can challenge it, it won’t replace all of us.
Why are you even attempting to get music out into the world when the chances of people hearing it are insanely small?
because i’m supposed to. it’s all i’m alive for at this point. and i have many messages to share. what is small? if we’re comparing ourselves to ultra famous people we’ll always feel small. meanwhile they’re just breathing, and thinking, and worrying, like the rest of us. they don’t know what’s going to happen tomorrow either. we’re all just riding a planet.
If you were granted a short audience with the omnipotent being and could play them one track of yours so that they would know who you are (in that moment), what track would that be?
definitely I’ll See You On The Moon from Laminar Flow.
