Jack Greenwood is a rising indie-rock artist with an excellent album that he released in 2019 called, Flying Softly. The album plays out like a 45-minute jam session with brilliant instrumentation and beautiful vocals (this is timeless music right here). I highly recommend it to people who are looking for some refreshing tunes. Anyway, "A Song About Time" is a song off the album that fits the picnic theme perfectly. I am enjoying the mellow and rhythmic rock production on the track—notably, the combination of the warm electric guitar and groovy bassline. Also, the uptempo percussion gives the anthem a nice kick and makes it something you could jam to while driving. And the jazzy saxophone towards the end of the song is a nice touch and gives the record more life.
Jack delivers a sweet vocal performance on this track and rides the production very well. I also think Jack did a great job of conveying his emotions while singing his words. In the lyrics, Jack touches on the idea of losing one's direction in life, which can lead to anxiety and depression.
"It's taking the road / Right out from under the wheels / Leaving me on a trail / That's not easy to reveal / In my head I wonder if it's all real / But when I'm stuck in my mind / I lose touch with my feels."
Jack could have meant something completely different with these lyrics, but that's how I interpret it. I also like the way this message ties with the concept of time. When we struggle with our thoughts and neglect the present moment, it will feel like time is flying by, especially when we start to have regrets.
"I'm missing the sun / Getting tired of sleeping / Turning a page / I wonder where has the time gone / Losing my way / I used to think it was timeless."
I love that these lyrics are vague enough to give listeners the freedom of interpretation, while also making room for the music to speak for itself. Overall, "A Song About Time" is a refreshing indie rock song with a hint of jazz, and it will make an excellent addition to the playlist. Jack Greenwood's debut album, Flying Softly, is available for streaming on Soundcloud, Apple Music, and Spotify.
