Soft chords set the mood while the drums give us this sense of tension. They are tight, punchy and hit us in the chest. A super wide vocal appears, one side slightly delayed behind the other creating a dream-like state – one where we understand as much as we are trying to figure out.
To be honest…
I’ve never really had a huge knowledge of the Blues. One, I don’t know what I’m looking for – or where to even start when filtering through endless boxes at a Record fair. I might know all the big names, but no idea of contemporary artists. This week I was fortunate to have it handed to me…
I have a long history with Johnny Cash. My Dad, a huge fan, liked to play his tracks, on repeat, for days at a time. The Saloon piano in the background, classic acoustic guitar, and that voice. Johnny Cash performs a cover of the Depeche Mode track, written by Martin Gore. This version forms part of his American IV: The Man Comes Around Album.
Royce Da 5’9 and DJ Premier return with “Era” featuring Dave East, the lead single from the upcoming PRhyme 2 album.
Dreamy, funky vibes are served up plentifully on this classic track from OutKast’s 2003 Speakerboxx/the Love Below double album. The song is a celebration of a new love, who may not be “the one” but who is good enough for now. Andre 3000 blissfully sings, harmonizes, and ad-libs about spending time with his prototype.
So on my personal timelines I keep seeing a ton of videos from fans doing a dance with their mom, wife, girlfriend, grandmother, or any other female they feel means a lot to them. The track used in the videos is from Algernod Lanier Washington from Fort Myers, Florida better known by his stage name “Plies”.
The UK is is stacked with musical talent. So much so that I believe they have America beat in almost every genre. The next wave of great young artists will be mostly be from the UK. I could go down the list but I want to save some of these artists for future posts.
Shilpa Ray has been one of my favorite artists since I’ve discovered her music a couple of years back. I used to curate songs for fellow music service A Song A Day, and send out five songs a week for about three years. During this time I’ve probably listened to the more new and undiscovered artists than I ever have an ever will. Anyhow – Shilpa Ray had me hooked from the start.
I was struggling a lot figuring out which song I wanted to follow up ‘My God Has a Telephone’ because I didn’t want to drastically change the mood. On the other hand I have been looking for an opportunity to include Sonder or Brett Faiyaz on this playlist because they became such a integral part of my music life. Their song Too Fast was featured on the promo for season 2 of Atlanta, which spiked their listeners on all platforms.
I’m having a bit of a piano week – actually I’m having a bit of an Igor Longhi week! 😉 His beautiful melancholic track Broken Soul is featured on the Music to Grieve to list and while running through his catalog I feel in love with this track too.
