Grup çok genç yıllarda The Beatles, The Doors gibi gözde gruplardan ve Del Shannon, Ray Charles gibi prestijli isimlerden oldukça etkilenmiş ve uyarlamalar yaparak hatta bunlardan bazılarını türkçeye çevirerek dikkatleri üzerine çekmişti.

Bu şarkıyı ilk kez 5-6 yıl önce dumanlı bir barda dinlediğimi hatırlıyorum. Mekanın genel konseptine epey uygun şarkılar peş peşe çalıyordu ve bu şarkı da oldukça hoşuma gitmişti. İnsanın ruh haline daha ilk saniyelerde tesir eden çok etkili bir parça. Bir anda yükseltip iyi hissettirebiliyor.

Üryan Geldim – Cem Karaca

Bana kalırsa Üryan Geldim’i diğer Cem Karaca şarkılarından ayıran şey Cem Karaca’ya dair akla gelen her şeyin şarkıda kendini göstermesi. Gitar ve vokalle başlayan şarkı, davul ve bağlamanın da katılması ile çok başka bir şeye dönüşüyor. Her dörtlüğün sonunda şarkıya yön veren davul atakları vokali de bambaşka bir boyuta taşıyor. Sözler de zaten Karacaoğlan’a ait olunca dinleyiciye kalan tek şey bir sigara yakmak oluyor.

Weathered – James Walker

Break Ups – perhaps the “safest” form of grief there is – no-one actually dies or is maimed but yet – when you’re going through them – safe isn’t exactly the word that comes to mind.

What I like about this track is how we’ve all been there – how when you think you’re out the other side you start to speak to your ex again and – in many cases get back together, but here – James deftly steers us away and puts an additional melancholy spin on the whole process.

Like a lot of young British movie fans of my age, the deceptively cheerful piano melody of this song first came to my attention in the 1970s as the theme music to the BBC’s long-running Film Review series (Film 1972, Film 1973 etc etc…) and it was nearly twenty years before I learned that this jolly jazz-gospel piano tune was in fact one of the key cultural touchstones of the American Civil Rights movement.

Tangerine – Led Zeppelin

When most people think of Led Zeppelin, they think of vibrating, electric, bad-to-the-bone rock and roll. However, as most bands worth their salt, they had a kaleidoscope of sounds, sounds that involved an overlapping of genres, including blues, country, reggae, R&B and folk. “Tangerine” is one of their songs that doesn’t quite fall into the category of their usual sound, while simultaneously being their quintessential sound.

Girlfriend – Busta Rhymes Ft. Vybz Kartel & Tory Lanez

There’s no denying the fact that Busta Rhymes is a legend in the game. While he doesn’t generally get the same level of props as many of the obvious GOAT contenders, the fact remains that Bus-A-Bus has been a mainstay in the game for nearly two decades. Plus, dude has worked with pretty much everybody, a boast which can now include talented new artists like Canadian rapper Tory Lanez . Now, after teasing the drop a few days back, Busta’s latest single “Girlfriend” has surfaced online. 

Black & Blue – Samantha Whates

I first came across Samantha Whates when she performed as a backup singer for Jess Bryant at the union chapel when I played there many moons go. I was intrigued by her voice and decided to check out her own material and this track ‘Black & Blue’ stood out for me with its lush guitar part, a bit of glockenspiel and strings, you know I love those strings.

Filha da Noite – Janine Mathias

Here’s one more talented Brazilian woman giving us the grace of her music.

It’s hard – and unfair – to label Janine Mathias.

She was born in Brasília, Midwest Brazil (also its capital city), and started her career in Curitiba, South Brazil; but the observable manifoldness in her music doesn’t stick only to the fact that she collects influences from all those places.

This is a track I’m particularly fond to. In fact, it’s the first encounter I had with modern classical music… and it was my wife, that made me discover it. We passed hours sharing earphones, keeping our hands tight and listening to it. Since that day, my musical life changed. The notes were touching my soul so deeply that I decided to get more into it, and I started my classical piano composing experience.
