Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’ – Michael Jackson

You might think this song belongs more on a playlist for dancing your baby to sleep. It does indeed work great for that, though my kids prefer “Beat It” for dance party purposes. But like a lot of the best uptempo songs, “Wanna Be Startin’ Somethin’” also works well if you sing it slowly.

What’s awesome about tracks with no vocals is that they leave space for you to fill the instrumentals with whatever’s going through your mind. You can just jam along to them and think about anything you want. The production gives you a clue of which directions your thoughts may go, but it’s up to you to step into the suggested journey or create your own and just take the song as the soundtrack!

Sometimes you forget musicians are real people, I know I do when I hear the clean craft of Hat Fitz and Cara Robinson. Absolutely unique, their sound blends pre war hill country and delta blues with early Australian folk and traditional Celtic styles.  Hat Fitz an Australian bluesman and Cara, born in Ireland, were drawn to music independently developing their own style before meeting and creating a new sound together.  Hat Fitz on guitar, Cara on fife and drums the duo effortlessly create and deliver real emotion and truth.  Power is the first track on the Wiley Ways Album, voted Blues Album of The Year 2012 by the Australian Blues Awards.

This song perfectly encompasses the essence of this playlist. The simple and spacey instrumental complimented by Frank’s beautiful vocals, take you to a whole other world. Closing your eyes and listening to this song is like a psychedelic trip with no drugs required.

This past summer I finally took in my first Dead show, not that I missed the bus so to speak, but I had never chance to fulfill that goal. Once the music started to flow I instantly felt at home. The vibes being shared by the legion of like minded kind people reminded me of why I fell in love with Jamband music all over again. Much like life music is an experience. Share it with good people.

For me personally, Blues Traveler will the band the opened my ears to the word of improvisational rock. I have been Fellow Traveler for over 20 years  and have seen some legendary shows but the day I went to the ‘96 H.O.R.D.E Festival forever changed the path my life would take…or at least made it more groovy.
