Amy Winehouse would have been 34 years old this year… a life cut way too short.  I will admit that when she was alive, I didn’t pay much attention to her music.  I know… that’s a tragedy in itself, but why not?  Through the media, all I heard about her was that she was a drug addict singing about not wanting to go to rehab. That seemed ridiculous to me at the time, so I missed out on some soulful and powerful music… but not for long!

The vastity of the ocean, a piano in the middle of a green sea of grass, and some young boys playing ring-around-the-rosy. This is what I see when I listen to Pern. The track rises and falls beautifully, becoming touching and uplifting at the same time.

Sour Suite – The Guess Who

The Guess Who is a Canadian group that hit the music scene in the early sixties. Their first single was “I Just Didn’t Have the Heart,” which was released in 1962, when their name was still the much more conventional Chad Allen and the Reflections. It wasn’t until 1965 that they officially became The Guess Who and started to blow up on the charts and on the stage.

The Thrill Is Back – Statik Selektah feat. Styles P & Talib Kweli

“Old versus new” discussions are recurrent in so many fields, and hip hop is not immune to it. 

American DJ Statik Selektah and rappers Talib Kweli and Styles P released “The thrill is gone” in 2010, expressing their anguishes about how contemporary hip hop is all about “funny clothes”, “Auto-Tunes” and is full of “too many vultures” but has little from the culture it is supposed to channel.

Happy? 

It is an accepted practice to talk about bad news, what’s wrong with the world, what we don’t like about it and whose fault it is.   And it is usually expected that we will listen.  I don’t want to listen to blame, I don’t regularly watch the news, I don’t read the paper everyday.  I don’t have to accept that what you are saying is the truth, I don’t have to engage in a conversation about what is wrong in the world and who made it wrong.  I will talk to you about what is real to you, in a real way.   This doesn’t always mean happiness, but it does mean truth.

Can Gox’u ilk kez 2015 yılının Ağustos ayında Bursa Nilüfer Müzik Festivali’nde dinlemiştim. Gün sahnenin arkasına doğru batarken, bir görüntü yönetmeninin kayda almak isteyeceği türden çok özel bi atmosfer vardı. Ellerinde biralarla herkes şarkılara eşlik ederken, güzel havanın tadını çıkaranlar da alanda yayılıp sohbetlerine bir soundtrack seçmişti. Çok kalabalıktı, kendisi genç sayılsa da birçok yaş grubundan insanlar, aileler sırf bu onun için bilet almış olsa gerek.
