Sunshine is a youthful song by producer Muzi, for his sounds that combine Afrobeat, hip-hop, electronic music, kwaito and other genres—with some being just local to South Africa. To some, he is also viewed as a leader in a new scene of South African post-apartheid millennials who are influencing music, fashion and culture.
The South African producer Muzi has captured the attention of critically-acclaimed artists, such as Diplo and Damon Albarn. Sunshine is a song that expresses Muzi’s journey through the music industry and how things are beginning to change for him. He emphasizes that he feels like he is pushing away the people he loves due to his constant travelling and dedication to his work. Muzi also acknowledges the young people who are true to themselves.
“Music was a way of expressing myself,” Muzi notes. “Others had sports, I found music. The experiences were just what we went through—nothing was inspiring about sleeping on couches and having 5 o'clock curfews so we'd be safe. It's just what I had to do to survive. The experiences don't influence how I make music, but they do remind me how far I've come and I'm definitely grateful.”
Sunshine comes off Muzi’s third studio album titled ZENO. ‘ZENO’ presents itself as a new, defining level in the artist’s unmistakable brand of modern African music. ZENO was written, recorded and produced mostly in South Africa with MUZI creating the album’s finishing touches while on tour in the States. The album’s sonics reveal the direct influence of his Kwa-Zulu Natal upbringing. The proud Zulu artist hails from a township in Empangeni, North of Durban; the place where MUZI first conceived of his place in music. Having soaked up the sounds of the time, he now expertly blends together cutting edge urban and electronic music with local genres like Maskandi, Kwaito, Iscathamiya and South African Bubblegum Pop of the 80s and 90s.
This album continues to be a demonstration of MUZI’s ahead-of-the-game musical output. Listeners will again experience him in all his glory as a songwriter, composer, vocalist and producer accompanied by select features from a few of South Africa’s exciting new talents.
