A song littered with nostalgia … wow … are we sensing a trend here?
I mean of course we are – but that’s okay! Night time driving was MEANT for nostalgic flashbacks and little moments of rear-view reflections. But every type of nostalgia is presented differently, and that’s where the interest and complexity lies.
Local Natives present their nostalgia through an upbeat, groove driven and vivid storytelling of their own narrative past – “Growing up in Southern California, we didn’t have many days without sun. ‘Dark Days’ brought to mind good memories of swimming on rainy days and sneaking out to your girlfriend’s house.”
So it would seem that for Local Natives, “Dark Days” is a little ode to first loves and past curfew sneak outs – cool! - but not the whole story.
The original version of “Dark Days” had originally been released in 2016 as a track on their Sunlit Youth album. However this version of the track features solo artist Nina Persson, a female vocalist which for me, seems to just heighten the track’s overall sentiment and its nostalgic storytelling. Through the addition of a third party artist on the track, there is a sense that more than one narrative is being told - which is even cooler! This makes the feeling of nostalgia seem like that which is deep-rooted in our genetic makeup, collective to the human condition, despite differences between how it may be presented. I don’t know about you, but to me, that’s reassuring as hell!
