“Put your into it before your best friend do it / Dreams do come true so invest and renew it”
Our track of the month is from the 10th member of the greatest rap group ever assembled: Wu-Tang Clan. Consider All Poor People Acceptable Don’t Oppress Nor Neglect Anyone, or Cappadonna for short, is a household name to any 90’s hip hop aficionado, and his story is what our playlist is all about. Cappadonna was working as a security guard when he went with his friend, U-God, to see RZA in the studio. The now iconic “Ice Cream” from Raekwon the Chef’s debut album happened to be playing at the time, and RZA invited Cappa to lay down a verse. 10 minutes later, the rest is history, and he was able to quit his job.
“The sun gotta shine sometimes / If you don’t work hard, and stay on your grind”
Rapping is a young man’s game, hearing about a 90’s rapper releasing new music elicits more nostalgia than actual hype. So when I saw Cappadonna released SMTM (stands for Show Me The Money) last year, I wasn’t exactly rushing to hear it. When I did take it for a spin, I was pleasantly surprised. It’s certainly no The Pillage, and I don’t think he’ll ever hit the pinnacle in lyricism that is his verse in “Winter Warz” (see video below), but it’s a solid effort. Our track of the month is “Infiltrate”, a soulful track that takes me back to old RZA production. The song is about perseverance, strategic moves, and taking care of business. A timely message from a timeless MC. 👐🏿
