About this Playlist
Rebel is as a rebel does. Girl rebels are no different. Whether in a Bad Habit of hooking up with someone as in the song 21Dayz by Angela Perry, fighting against the rules of society as in The Gypsy in Me by Bonnie Raitt, or questioning ideas and views as in I Like it Heavy by Halestorm, all rebel in some way. Some rebel by shouting it out, some rebel by being passive-aggressive, some rebel by withdrawing, and some rebel by not acknowledging the issue. It’s the rebellious side of human nature that compels us to listen and write songs that express the side that we don’t like people to see. It gives us a safe place to let out all the shadows and look at what it is to be truly human.
Music is the one way in which we can acknowledge the rebel part in us especially in the case of being a woman. In “The Magdalene Laundries” Joni Mitchell describes the decisions made by some who rebel against society and all of its forms of oppression particularly for individuals who are female. In the song “Sister Cry” by Angela Perry the word Why is used to ask humanity why they allow women murdered or missing just for who they are. The song “Any Man of Mine” by Shania Twain, although it sounds lighthearted, is really about the stereotypes that are placed on women. The song is a role reversal and actually carries depth even in its lighthearted nature. The playlist contain a variety of music from different genres which help reflect the topic of the different types of rebellion.
