I fought the fight
A$AP Rocky. Ty Dolla $ign. !!!. CHVRCHΞS. And our artist of the week: 6LACK. These artists are instigators. Symbols and numbers in names were supposed to end with whatever Prince called himself, but here we are. Just another gate to weed out anyone over 50 from the current music scene. Kids these days, amirite? Just so we’re clear, it’s pronounced black.
Roll up the dice
“Know My Rights” is a standout track off Atlanta’s 6LACK’s latest EP, 6pc Hot. I first discovered him with his song “Prblms” and have been following him ever since. Real relationship R&B. It’s not all love and happiness with 6LACK, exposing the hard side of finding love is oddly refreshing. He’s half of the team behind one of my favorite songs from 2018: “Pretty Little Fears”.
Bet on my life
6LACK brings Lil Baby along for the ride on this one, who adds a solid verse in his signature fast whiny cadence. He cosigns 6LACK’s frantic and unconventional approach to his career: “I keep on passin’ on deals, one day I’ma chill / One day, I’ma get me a spot in the Hills / But until, I’m servin’ these packs / Keep on murderin’ tracks, keep on rollin’ the dice”
Paid the price
Produced by a Brit (FWDSLXSH) and a Canadian (London Cyr), the sound is international and encompassing. I call it “elevated trap”. Smooth and headnod-inducing. ‘Nuff said.
Take no advice
The track is about finding success independently, taking the risks and moving towards a goal as you create a path that makes sense for you. Once you have that mindset of “failure is not an option”, life has a way of ensuring your success. It’s not a privilege, it’s a right.
