February 4th 2018 is the 19th anniversary of the death of an unarmed African immigrant in New York called Amadou Diallo. The 23-year-old had the misfortune to match the description of a wanted criminal and was shot dead by police in the street outside his Bronx apartment building in a tragic case of mistaken identity. A subsequent enquiry revealed that the police officers had collectively fired 41 live rounds, 19 of which hit their target. This astonishing fact is immortalised by American storyteller Bruce Springsteen’s most controversial song, American Skin (41 Shots).

Daniel Caesar broke onto the mainstream scene with his breakout hit Get You. But for some including myself the song Violet. Now I’m not going to pretend that I knew Daniel Caesar before everyone else.  Violet was one of those songs that I stumbled upon and enjoyed but never payed attention to who the artist was. Two years later I put the pieces together and realized this was not an artist to overlook.

Break over I hunt out the Old Gym where I’m to teach my first drama lesson. It’s begun to rain, so find myself humming Carole King.

The Old Gym’s an ancient shell of a building, cold and unwelcoming, smelling of damp and echoing to my footsteps. The walls are peeling paint and the wooden floor’s dusty. An old pommel horse is parked in the corner and ancient rusting basketball rings are at each end. Wall bars line one side. There are also several wooden benches stacked up. It’s heart-sinkingly dank.

 ‘Hi, sir. Are you our drama teacher?’…
