Daniel Caesar, one of the most promising up-in-coming R&B/Soul artists at the moment, puts his own spin on Kanye West’s Street Lights off of his 5th album, 808s & Heartbreaks. Normally, covers don’t make it into my rotation but there’s no denying how amazing this cover is. Daniel substitutes Kanye’s autotuned vocals with beautifully conducted singing that some may even argue, trumps the original recording of the song. The song explains is sung from the position of someone who appears to be taking a cab ride home, viewing the streetlights as metaphors for the memories and past experiences that have gotten them to where they are now. Daniel ends the song by adding his own little acoustic, lo-fi verse about how he’s blessed to have what he haves and that the Lord has given and taken away what needs to be in order for Daniel to go down the path of life he deserves. This song is a fantastic representation of looking oneself in the mirror and being aware that everything that’s happened in your life has happened for a reason. There are going to be many more ups and downs but you will always end up where you need to be.
