The famed psychoanalyst Carl Jung spoke of the ‘shadow self,’ which are the parts of our psyche and personality we don’t want to deal with, the things hidden away so that we don’t make other feel uncomfortable.
The problem with that is hiding things isn’t dealing with things, and these things have a way of bleeding into your everyday life in a lot of unpleasant ways.
Therefore, it is necessary to do what is called ‘shadow work.’ Dealing with the unpleasant things in a constructive manner, providing your life with purpose and meaning.
Music has been a powerful tool and ally when it comes to my own shadow work. Not long ago, I found myself getting into synthwave. It quickly became one of my favourite genres.
I’m incredibly fond of songs where the title and lyrics can have multiple meanings. Possession here can mean being taken by someone or something, or taking over something. The act can be either passive or active.
It’s a powerful metaphor, the idea of depression being this entity that possesses you. It takes you over and infects you, the darkness spreading until it dominates every aspect of your being…
