About this Playlist
Blotter on Paisley Tongues is a good three and a half hours listen. That’s a few hours short of any acid trip, but you don’t actually need to be taking tabs to catch the vibe here. If you like psychedelic and adjacent music, then it’s a decent, albeit slightly different playlist featuring bands from America, the UK, Japan, Africa, and a few more spots around the globe. Some of the bands or sounds might be new to you, and if so, great—who doesn’t love the unexpected!
The playlist crosses a number of psychedelic styles, and you’ll find a good number of decades too. I wanted to get a few tried and true tracks here, so there’s The Doors, Zeppelin, Hendrix, Grace Slick, although the version of “White Rabbit” I’ve chosen, with Slick accompanied by The Great Society, might take you by surprise if you’re expecting the Jefferson Airplane edition. I also went off path choosing the Hendrix and Zeppelin tracks. These artists have songs with more psychedelic punch, but I’ve heard them a thousand times, so…enough said about that.
My Brian Jonestown Massacre choice will seem odd to some, but I like the track a lot, and since I’ve also dropped Tess Parks’ “Gates of Broadway” onto the playlist (you can feel the Anton Newcomb influence here, although I’m not sure they collaborated on this occasion) I wanted the sounds to stand apart, and well, pretty much any BJM song could be considered a trip.
Listeners might note that not all tracks falls neatly under the psychedelic label, and some of them may even raise an eyebrow. That’s okay. If it’s on the playlist, it’s because it has some relationship to the genre… even if that relationship only exists in my mind.
