Nine Inch Nails (NIN) is one of the very few Industrial bands that got to flirt with mainstream success. Founded in 1988 by frontman Trent Reznor, they had two successful releases in the 1990s which contributed to the band's worldwide sales of over 20 million copies. On top of that, NIN has been nominated for several Grammy Awards and actually won twice in 1992 and in 1996 for their songs "Wish" and "Happiness in Slavery".
Originally, NIN's music could be considered a blend between harsh industrial with a healthy dose of metal thrown in. Heavily influenced by industrial bands like Ministry and Skinny Puppy, and synthpop pioneer Gary Numan, Reznor found his own signature sound: dark industrial that was yet accessible and laden with rock. As time progressed, NIN's music evolved and started to incorporate a more atmospheric electronic sound, in some cases even ambient.
What really needs to be noted, though, is that in many ways Nine Inch Nails was really Reznor's solo project. The line up was ever-changing and Reznor made it very clear that he was the only official NIN member. This, however, finally changed in 2016 when Reznor introduced his longtime friend and film scoring partner Atticus Ross as an official second NIN member.
For our playlist, we decided on the track "Into the Void", taken from NIN's third studio album 'The Fragile' released in 1999. It showcases NIN's signature sound. Enjoy!
