To the big audience, the name Gary Numan will forever be associated with his 1979 smash hit "Cars". In some way, that is unfortunate because that track is least representative of his oeuvre. The synth-pop pioneer's work borrows elements from various music genres: punk, electronica, and darkwave, to name just a few. His influence is unmistakable: well-known artists like Kanye West, Trent Reznor, and even Prince have spoken about his influence on them.
The selected track is an absolute gem from his critically acclaimed 2017 album "Savage (Songs From A Broken World)". It showcases Numan's signature sound: dark, industrial soundscapes permeated by bleak lyrics that paint pictures of dystopian gloom. Fun fact: Numan's 11-year old daughter, Persia, provides the background vocals on this track.
This is, definitely, a track that deserves to be heard. Have a listen!
