Operation Zero – Dr. Octagon

8 May 2018

Operation Zero – the jellyfish moves closer.  He’s not your friend, but goes where he goes.  Learn what he knows and find moosebumps on your earlobes.  Feel the sting on your chest as the shapeless menace manifests.  Tentacles reaching forever and far flung.  Nobody likes to get stung.

Doin’ That Thing – Les McCann

1 May 2018

The life of a jellyfish is full of trials and tribulations.  Predators, food shortages, ruthless competitors, sickness just to name a few.  It can sometimes be hard just to keep your head below water — if you have a head, that is.  The successful jellyfish will take it all in stride though.  Just keep doing that thing, whatever it is, and maintain a cool, seaworthy temperature.

Did It Snow in Brampton Last Night? – Kendora

17 April 2018

As a jellyfish who generally inhabits colder waters, people often ask me this.  When it snows on the ocean, does it ever stick?  Does your home become like a salt-water slushy?  The answer, of course, is yes.  The ocean itself can also freeze.  I know I was welcoming the arrival of spring only 2 weeks ago, but there has been a bit of a turnabout back into winter where this jellyfish stays…

Sonnet 130 – APE feat. Layla Moallem, Jah-Zee

We jellyfish are living embodiments of the essence of poetry.  Poetry in motion, one might even say.  We are simple, succinct, infinitely manifold — even pointlessly so — and beautiful to contemplate.  As the world’s most efficient swimmers, we also aptly represent the words of Polonius from Shakespeare’s Hamlet:

Kronkronhinko – Ayub Ogada

3 April 2018

The year cycles back into the growing time for life on land in the northern hemisphere.  Land creatures sing joyful songs as the plants start to rise up from the soil…

I Want to Be Evil – Eartha Kitt

20 March 2018

A lot of humans dislike jellyfish.  They point out that many of us can sting you horribly – even fatally.  We sometimes swarm right near public beaches and force them to close for the day.  We’re alien and often grotesque in appearance, and so on…

Three King Fishers – Gabor Szabo

13 March 2018

This jellyfish is on the move today.  The vast mountains of coral streak past.  Schools of fish go about their business on either side.  Cucumbers and anenome wave hello from the ocean floor.  A lone squid pauses his hunt for a moment to clock you with his enormous eyes.  You pick up speed, and all the ocean’s denizens start to blur together…

Badboi – Pegboard Nerds

6 March 2018

Occasionally, when conditions are just right, an absolute torrent of delicious sea creatures comes flowing your way.  So much food your eyes and your stomach grow ten sizes too big — if you happen to have eyes or a stomach.  Then it starts…  the feeding frenzy.

Sway – POM

27 February 2018

Swaying — now this is something we jellyfish do extremely well.  Sway in the current.  Sway with the turbulent surf.  The ocean is always moving.  Complex interwoven rhythms compete with one another to influence our direction.  The jellyfish knows how to roll with it.  The jellyfish sways to the dominant rhythm of the moment with great ease and comfort.

Tried by 12 – East Flatbush Project

21 February 2018

The ocean is vast and unforgiving.  Very often where we jellyfish like to congregate, there are also predators.  This is especially true considering that the most common predator of jellyfish is other jellyfish.  Humans are similar in this regard.  They are their own worst enemy.  Naturally also, the more dense the human population, the greater the pressure to survive.  The most crowded cities are often where humans can be found killing each other.

(Going Down To) Big Leg Emma’s House – Champion Jack Dupree

13 February 2018

Every jellyfish encounters the doldrums. There you are floating along, floating along, seemingly going nowhere. It’s as if you’re heading down the same road forever, the scenery never changing.  Even the greatest efforts to advance or attain some improved vantage point produce no results.

Let Me Tell You Something – Grandtheft & Jackal

7 February 2018

The currents are shifting.  The motion is jarring, even confusing.  These are the moments when you must let go of your sense of direction, and allow yourself to be taken where the ocean wants you to go.  You must make peace with the uncertainty of your destination.
