I still remember the time I discovered The Mars Volta, I was watching an MTV Latin American awards show and they were introduced by Zack de la Rocha, I remember his words were profound and exciting, he said The Mars Volta was a band that was more interested in creating moments than creating hits, by the time he ended his short speech I felt a growing interest just to listen to what was coming even though I had no idea which band was this.
Then it hit me, like getting hit by a bus after being dropped off a supersonic plane in the middle of a thunderstorm. I had never heard anything quite like that, I just started laughing and felt completely clueless about how to address such an enormous amount of energy and lack of understanding for anything that I was witnessing.
And as fast as it started it ended, abruptly as it all felt. The music was so crazy to me, I couldn't understand a word but loved the flow and all the bizarre and frantic dancing moves these guys with afros had in them. It got stuck in me and then when the band had some hits on MTV I was hooked, this was the time the mp3 was starting to be a thing and just downloading this music and being able to listen to it whenever I wanted was such a thrill, Deloused in the Comatorium is such a masterpiece of made of words and crazy sounds...
So here's a little taste of this magnificent band, definitely look for that Latin VMA's gig on youtube, it will blow your mind, just watched it again and it never grows old.
