Former Jam frontman and “Modfather” Paul Weller was determined that The Style Council’s 1985 UK Top Ten hit Walls Come Tumbling Down should be a “balls-out soul tune” from the Motown mould and so you could be forgiven for failing to notice at first that this hip-swaying Eighties pop hit is a red-blooded, revolutionary protest song with the very positive and provocative refrain of “Governments crack and systems fall / ‘Cause unity is powerful / Lights go out, walls come tumbling down”…

I am so happy I stumbled upon Vagabon’s music, because her 2017 debut album, Infinite Worlds, has been haunting me for months in the best possible way. The first time I heard this song, I’m pretty sure I was silent with my jaw dropped until the end.

A four-hour flight from UK, Erotes turns out to be a picture postcard image of Greece. Two sandy bays, an ancient acropolis overlooking the village’s sugar cube houses, it’s bathed in hot sun. There’s the smell of lemon and olive trees, the sound of bouzoukis playing “Zorba the Greek”, cobbled streets with shops selling souvlaki, ceramics and silver. Blue, blue sky.

Jimi Hendrix fiery interpretation of Bob Dylan’s All Along the Watchtower, from Hendrix’s classic Electric Ladyland struck a deep and resonant chord on its release in September 1968. According to Dylan, Hendrix “could find things inside a song and vigorously develop them” and with all along the watchtower he found something which spoke to the frustrations and confusion surrounding US involvement in the Vietnam War in both the pro and anti war camps.
