That’s how Miguel once labeled his music, and honestly, there’s probably no better description for our track this week. “Coffee” (originally called “Coffee (Fucking)” was the lead single of the R&B singer’s 2015 album, Wildheart.

Burna Boy never disappoints on a track it’s almost scary at this point!

I really love the production on this track and the beat stayed stuck in my head for days after listening to it for the first time.  Ghanian-UK producer Julz really went in on this production and deserves so much credit.

Law – Richard Spaven

Richard Spaven is a fantastic drummer from London, UK and this track is a single from his album “The Self”. I first encountered this track on Youtube when Spaven did a live performance version on Meinl Cymbals’ channel. If you have never checked out Youtube channels of drum manufacturers, you are in for a treat – I have discovered some amazing music through their gear videos.

All It’s Done – Elastic Band

Do you remember a time when music was interesting, psychedelic and yet, at the same time fun? It’s hard, isn’t it? Perhaps because this marriage of psychedelia and fun is not that common – at least not anymore. You’d have to go back to the music made in the late sixties or early seventies to find a larger pool of it relatively easily. By the way, if you do, check out tracks such as Procol Harum’s “Good Captain Clack” or “Being For The Benefit Of Mr. Kite!” by the Beatles, as they are fantastic songs and productions. And if you don’t much like the music made in the sixties, don’t worry, there is another way to find out what I am talking about. Just google the Spanish Elastic Band’s fantastic single “All It’s Done” and give it a spin.

Their songs are sonic collages that use daring tricks as a means to intertwine decades, genres, trends and frequencies. This is done to reach unexpected musical destinations. With songs that could style-wise be described as leftovers from the 20th century, this duo is attempting to create 21st century pop. I’d love to share what she had to say about the song because I think she’s really dropped some wisdom here:

“As a person just starting out in their 20’s and currently in college at the time of writing this, I’m coming to a point in my life where our choices in life really make an impact on the future. People say that college is a time of exploration, discovery, and self-growth, but in that process, we may stumble and make mistakes. And honestly, that’s okay. “Weak” focuses on that. It doesn’t just talk about the temptations in life, but an acceptance about giving into them, even when you know you shouldn’t. I’d even go as far to say that it embraces that struggle. And I believe everyone’s been through (or will go through) that.”

Heads Or Tails – Winona Forever

Vancouver band Winona Forever is one of my favorite discoveries of this year. With two EP’s under their belt and a new EP on the way, “Heads Or Tails” is Proving to be their strongest single yet. With jazzy horns, a groovy bass line and some of the best drumming I’ve heard from an indie band in a while. Winona Forever is rising fast.

Rigamortis – Kendrick Lamar

Rigormortis is defined as the muscular stiffening of the body following death. When Kendrick released Rigamortis in 2011 that was his message to every rapper in the industry that they were dead and there was nothing that they could about it. In the song he says,

SupervILLain – Cway

Just Like J- Gutz, I’ve followed Cway for the last years also.It hurts me to see someone with such talent go basically unheard of. Cway’s swag and flow stands in a category all it’s own and $UPERVILLAIN puts his lyrical prowess on full display. The dark themed beats allows Cway to effortlessly demolish all who stand in his path through the use of comic book bars. 

Louder – J- Gutz

I’ve been following J- Gutz for the last couple of years and am waiting on the meteoric explosion that will follow once he gets his break. His flow and voice are fresh, raw, and captivated me from the first 16 I ever heard laid out from this man. When it comes to the bars the man is next level.
