This playlist is a funk bunker. A refined collection of deeply curated groove. A trusted source for recently released tracks that have that feel and that funk, in any sense of the two terms. Home to both well known artists, and new artists who might be lesser known. <1,000? No prob. If it feels good, it is good. All tracks are hand-picked by the band Medicinal Groove.
Fresh because this list only includes tracks from contemporary artists. (Throwback, classic funk from pioneers means the world to us, but that's a whole other playlist.) The goal of this list is to point groove seekers in the proper direction of what's happening out there in funk right now. Take The Brothers Nylon and Otis McDonald for example. They are currently releasing new stuff almost every week. That's some serious "currently occurring" music. At the very least, listeners will get tracks from within the last 15 years, if not the last 15 days.
Deep because this list only includes tracks on that deep cut level. But what does "deep" even mean? Simply put, find a great artist, then find their innermost tracks. These tracks won't necessarily always be their most famous or trendy tracks. For example, we've got Vulfpeck in the mix of course, but did you even know how hard The Cup Stacker grooves? And we all know about how Charlie Hunter changed the game on Voodoo, but have you experienced his melting uni-vibed out guitar alongside the vocals of Lucy Woodward on Angel Eyes yet?
Deep also has to do with an overall style of sound that relies heavily on production choices, lyrical content, creative harmony, or just the overall stankiness of a track. Refer to the Delvon Lamarr Organ Trio track on this list for a better understanding of stank. We're not only digging deep into discographies, but also into new, or under-identified artists seeking a home for their tracks to grow. Or perhaps we are trying to grow perspective on what funk can mean in today's opaque musical landscape. Are CARRTOONS and Unknown Mortal Orchestra really funk? If you choose the right tracks and listen deeply... yes, they are.
Funk because this list only includes tracks that contain crucial elements of funk. Funk is a broad term but chances are, if your soul understands it before your brain does...it's funky. For instance the track Bank Account by Louis Cole contains a keyboard break that is so cold-blooded, you will shout the word funk. Or the drum groove and saturated tones on Get Sun by Hiatus Kaiyote...there's so much funk there. Don't rule it out just because it doesn't sound exactly like Brick House. Genres have vast parameters these days. This playlist intends to stay within the framework of funk, but also use the word in a descriptive sense.
