Relationships can be tricky and every one is different. We’ve all had a friend discuss their relationship issues and you try to give them advice and although they agree and nod their heads yes, they don’t act on it. Or vice versa, you’ve been the one to get advice but you know that they just don’t understand the complexities of your relationship. No one can completely understand another’s relationship but every once in a while, music does.
I have a good list of songs whose lyrics so perfectly capture some of my relationships (friends, boyfriends, flings). You & Jennifer is definitely one of them. Some of us have been unfortunate enough to be cheated on by the people we love. If that was you, maybe you found out through a phone, maybe you were told by your partner, and maybe you just knew it in your gut. I knew it in my gut and I knew what was happening while it was happening. With no evidence, I was told that the other girl was just a friend, and had no option but to either trust or leave. I did neither and just ignored it. Long distance makes it easy to ignore. That was a mistake as the anger built up but music was such a strong release as I figured out what I wanted to do. Songs like You & Jennifer which tell the story of someone who knows they’re being cheated on:
“Fuck you and Jennifer, I know that you're out with her
Go pretend that you're just friends
Thrusting in and out of her
I can see her close her eyes
While you kiss her soft and nice
Fuck you and Jennifer
Go fucking make love to her”
When you think/find out about this breach of trust, you can’t stop picturing it. This song perfectly captures not only what goes through your mind but the anger that courses through. She captures the feeling of being young & reckless and yet tired & weary of the world and all of it’s punches.
