There are certain songs that define a genre. When people think of the short lived chillwave genre people think of Washed out - Feel it all around.
During the genre's peak, an impressive four years (2009-2012) Many staple artists emerged to carve the chillwave genre into legitimacy. Other artists such as Neon Indian and Toro Y Moi helped carry their torch. The latter ending up being the only one to reach mainstream success.
Nevertheless Feel it all around is the foundation. It introduced the majority of chillwave fans to the genre. Even if it didn’t true fans know this is the epitome. The cheap Lo-fi synths, the detuned bass line and vocals that are “washed out” in reverb. Rarely in life do the originators get their due respect. Other artists may have did it better, but washed out did it first, and that has to stand for something right?
