Tobi Lou is a rising hip-hop artist from Chicago with a unique style. In most of his songs, Tobi tends to rap about personal issues related to mental health or love. But, Tobi usually balances his somber lyricism with his energized melodic delivery and colorful instrumentals. These elements are present on his single, "Troop." The production on the track is dreamlike and spacey, which gives Tobi Lou a lot of room to works his magic. Also, the instrumental alone was carefully crafted since it has nine production credits.
Anyway, Tobi Lou slightly touches on having a marijuana addiction in the hook of the song.
"So I had a little bit of the issues / The blunt kept sayin’ I could fix you."
Although the drug addiction lyric is gloomy, Tobi Lou juxtaposes it with a vibrant beat and self-confident lyrics.
"I dress so casual / I think I’m magical / I’m black and I’m beautiful"
It seems like Tobi is expressing that happiness is about learning to love yourself in spite of the emotional baggage you carry. This is a beautiful message that is embedded in his style of making music. Overall, "Troop" is a great summer picnic song because of Tobi Lou's inspiring message and earworm melodies.
