"New Light" is John Mayer's 2018 soft rock single with a beat that sends listeners back to the 80s. In fact, No I.D. and John Mayer produced the track together. No I.D. is well known for his hip-hop production, which makes his work on this rock song even more impressive. Anyway, the retro bass guitar chords and the groovy drum patterns set a nice foundation for the pop song. Additionally, the sweet keyboard progression combined with John Mayer's angelic background vocals is like chocolate syrup on an ice cream sundae.
On the track, John is singing from the perspective of a man infatuated with a girl and wants a chance with her. But, John is stuck in the friend zone. In spite of the cliche topic, John Mayer makes the song interesting with some funny lyrics and a singing performance that captures the emotion of the situation. In addition, John performs a soothing guitar solo towards the end of the track that deserves a listen. Overall, "New Light" is a sweet and memorable song with a nice summer vibe for picnics.
