I absolutely love drum-focused instrumental music, improvisation, and seeing a drummer as a bandleader. This week's track, "Slightest Right," is from Chicago drummer Makaya McCraven, and it checks off all three of those boxes. The song, and the rest of the songs from the 2015 album "In the Moment," was birthed from live collective improvisation with Makaya and his band, who blend jazz, hip hop, African rhythms, and a high level of impromptu personal expression.
The track is exploratory, peaceful, and meditative. The irresistible drum and acoustic bass loop, complemented with the trance-like vibraphone patterns draw you into a relaxed flow that easily sets your mind right.
