What is Thursday Throwback?
Similar to a lot of internet hashtag trends, throwback Thursday, also known as TBT is a social media trend. It dates back to 2006. However, pinpointing exactly when it began and who is responsible for starting it is more difficult to determine.
Wikipedia, quoting Sports Illustrated, for example, suggests the phrase began from a series of 2006 posts run by the sneaker blog, Nice Kicks. On the other hand, Merriam-Webster attributes the phrase to a blog by artist Saxton Moore during the same year.
What doesn’t appear to be under dispute is that #TBT first gained traction on Instagram in 2010. The shocker is that the throwback Thursday hashtag became vastly popular when the Kardashians began using it on the platform. Okay, not shocking. For better or worse, the Kardashian family are responsible for many social media trends. We can thank them for pushing #TBT into the popular lexicon.
What do Nice Kicks, Saxton Moore and the Kardashians have in common? They all used throwback Thursday to have a bit of nostalgic fun. Nice Kicks throwback blog posts were all about vintage sneakers. Moore’s posts contained reimaginings of vintage cartoons. And the Kardashian’s often kick it back with photos from the 90s.
Thursday throwback is all about nostalgia, and so are TBT playlists… usually.
