According to their bio, “DANSU is an indie electro act from Amsterdam, whose neo-pop grooves are undeniably catchy yet refreshingly unpretentious.”
This is not an overstatement, as "State of Mind," DANSU’s latest single offering, is indeed a very catchy indie-pop track. It features a rather clever organ hook, soothing acoustic guitars, some nicely arranged electronic percussions, great lead vocals and very cool background vocals – check out the chanting harmonies in the finale of the song as they are brilliant! Regardless of your musical preferences, if you are a pop fan, you will most likely enjoy this tune – it’s very hard to imagine anyone disowning it.
While DANSU’s press release describes the song as summery, to me there’s something autumn like about it. Perhaps it’s the whimsical quality of the tune, the ease with which it’s delivered or the crispiness of the overall sound. Who knows? As I listen to it, look out the window and see the falling leaves, I’m reminded of something that happened a long time ago in the fall of 1988.
Our yard was covered in the most spectacularly beautiful leaves you can imagine: red, yellow, orange and purple. It was all quite breathtaking. And then there was me, going through the leaves in panic because I had accidentally dropped my grandfather’s car keys somewhere there upon fetching a bouquet of flowers he’d forgotten in the backseat of his Chevrolet Impala. What was a simple job, had turned into a complex and challenging assignment.
I looked for an hour and went back inside empty handed. My dad looked at me in amusement, put on his shoes, went outside for five minutes and returned with the car keys. I was amazed and wanted to know how that was possible. “Simple,” my dad responded, “We were looking for different things. You were looking for car keys, while I was looking for a way to get to work tomorrow and sign that important deal I’ve been talking about. Your grandad’s car is blocking everyone else’s in the driveway. Besides, if we hadn’t found the keys, he would have spent the night.” I remember laughing out loud with my dad.
Motivation is a funny thing. Faith might move mountains but motivation…it helps people perform miracles.

About the curator - Tommi Tikka
Tommi Tikka is a linguist, poet, professional songwriter, recording artist and a music aficionado. He started playing guitar when he was four and writing songs when he was six. Consequently, he doesn't remember a time when he wasn't playing or writing. It's fair to say, music and lyrics are not just something he loves to engage himself in. To him, they are a way of life.
