I spent my childhood learning about classical music through the cello, then when I was in high school I picked up the guitar and a whole new world entered my life. After that, I got interested in audio production film scoring, leading to electronica, jazztronica, fusion, experimental music, sound art etc.
I was lucky enough to experience different genres of music and art. Perhaps that is what encouraged me to be a composer that is not defined by any specific musical genres, but to “learn and write everything that I love”.
In order to do that, I need to first enrich my own musical vocabulary, and I try to be as open-minded as I can be to as many types of music as possible. It has been a part of my life to to be constantly on the lookout for music and art that are new to me, sometimes perhaps even out of my comfort zone (whatever that is), so one day I can have a diverse range of sound and colours that would assist me in building a voice that is versatile, diverse and expressive.
So collecting and assembling lists of different exciting new music has been a thing I did for a long time; I just never realised that a lot of people do this publicly on various platforms; for years my playlists have existed in the form of scribbles on notepads, word documents titled “this is awesome no. 079” and excel spreadsheets.
At times, it can be a struggle to keep myself motivated to pursue new music and constantly re-educate myself in "what else is there". As a solo musician with an intensive day job that is entirely irrelevant to music and art, it can feel lonely at times. Therefore, I hope my musical adventures with this playlist would keep myself motivated and hopefully assist other like minded composers who may be in a creative rut, looking out for “what’s new out there”.
Are you a rock/metal guitarist writing for your band? You may be surprised by some of the contemporary classical music I put out here.
Are you a student of classical music? Allow me to introduce you to some really intricate and tasteful progressive rock music.
Are you an acoustic singer/songwriter? Check out this eletronica jazz tune that has nothing to do with your current project, but might make you go “oooooohhhhh, what if…”
I hope this playlist could give you that much needed “light bulb” moment, that surprise discovery making you think “wow, there is so much more I can do as a musician”.
