Low Tide Levee

Low Tide Levee

The image of the sea at its lowest level—low tide—and the shore littered with an array of curiosities, presents a powerful metaphor for self-reflection. The idea of a “mental low tide” can be applied to those revelatory but fleeting moments after a hit of pot or a microdose, or upon waking up from a vivid dream. They can even occur in a random jolt of inspiration where a buried desire comes into consciousness.

Singer, composer, songwriter, drummer, pianist, and former marine biologist Amy Brookes experienced one of these flickers of enlightenment during a meditative moment in the shower. Suddenly, a riff came to her, and she realized a way to reconcile her love of composing and singing with drumming and her obsession with the mighty groove of Led Zeppelin’s John Bonham. Today, Amy emerges from this seismic epiphany with the power trio Low Tide Levee who dredge up funky psychedelic rock on its 8-song debut album, Land of the Lotus Eaters.

“The name Low Tide Levee speaks to me on a lot of levels: I do love marine biology, I am a diver, and I am passionate about ocean conservation,” the Bay Area-based artist says. She continues: “The analogy of low tide symbolizing revealing things in our unconscious and subconscious is powerful for me. I am always drawn to looking at the strange and gross things after a low tide. Exploring those things metaphorically in our minds can be healing and powerful." Adding in "levee" was the perfect way to tie in the band's firm grounding in the blues and obsession with all things Led Zeppelin.

Low Tide Levee’s trippy and transformative music is a freewheeling adventure into heavy, blues-based riff rock, stanky funk, and sneaky adventures into sprawling psychedelia. Lyrically, the songs can be mystical, playfully irreverent, and enlightening—sometimes in the same song. “A lot of the subjects we write about are things bubbling inside of me—themes of finding one’s power, and rising like a phoenix as an allegory.” Amy shares.

The newly emerging band of seasoned musicians features Amy as the primary creative force—she writes the songs, sings lead vocals and harmonies, and plays drums, percussion, and keyboard. Her husband, Sasha Ames, is the band’s bassist (and sometimes studio guitarist), and the trio is rounded out by Dustin Neuman on guitar. From Roadie Music: "Much more than a musical project, Low Tide Levee takes the listener on a journey through sounds and textures that pack the best of rock to narrate feelings and stories that will free you to use your imagination and dive into the deepest ocean in their new single called 'Nautilus'."
