The Rain Song is a melancholic song, about the power of one’s love once they give it to you. It is a dynamic number; noticeably happier at times than the other songs on this playlist, but its melancholic vibe reminds of us love.
Led Zeppelin’s lyrical mastery is in their ambiguity – and to be honest – I have no exact idea what they’re talking about here. All I know is that in invokes some melancholic emotions in me. The ambiguity is also what makes this song great – you can just sit back and fill your own head with your emotions. The song opens with a delicate acoustic part, making you revel in the fragility that is our own emotions. The song later builds to a more upbeat middle section, wiping your sadness away for a moment, to later close with the same delicate beginning, bringing our emotions full circle.
I am not brought any specific memories with “The Rain Song”, rather the overarching path that my love has taken me on. I see no face either. No one person is the cause of my heartache, and neither is one person for my happiness. This song is not a desperate call for attention from the jailer of our hearts, but a song for the celebration of our own emotions.
At the end of the day, you still may be struggling with those feelings with past exes, or current affairs, but “The Rain Song” by Led Zeppelin will make you just a little bit stronger.
